I am a veteran D&D themed CRPG gamer, but never actually played pen and paper. Owning the Starter Set for a while I'm planning to give it a go in the near future. I am planning to buy the following books after that:
On Beyond:
PHB - helps creating character faster and then print it out
Xanathar's - same as above (and from what I hear it's also a fun read)
Tasha's - mostly for the sidekick creation rules
Sword Coast Adventure's Guide - just because it's included in the Player Bundle and could get it on discount.
Physical books:
PHB + MM + DMG - they are available as a gift set. Plus, I'm sure that having a physical copy of PHB would really help around the table.
Adventures!!! Not sure which one yet or in which order, but somehow the ones that containing collections of smaller adventures appeal to me more, at least right now: Tales from the Yawning Portal, Candlekeep Mysteries and Ghost of Saltmarsh.
Plus, I may get a great deal on the 2 Tyranny of Dragons adventures from ebay (not sure yet).
You might find the essentials kit good. It provides several sidekicks, so it might be better to buy then Tasha’s in your situation. You can change the names and personalities and have a basic and balanced set of sidekicks without much work. It’s doesn’t level them up as far, but it costs half as much. It also has DoIP, which is a very good module. Dndbeyond has some great sequels of it.
There’s a hard cover gift set due out in January with Xanathar’s, Tasha’s and monsters of the multiverse (a re-done Mordenkainen’s I think). Not sure if there will be a price break on it as a set, but if you’re considering those books you might want to wait for that.
I've actually already ordered The Essential Kits as it can be nicely combined with the LMOP adventure from The Starter Set and it provide a code for 50% off from the PHB on Beyond + it unlocks supplementary content for the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure on Beyond (not sure if it will unlock the entire Essential Kit bundle, I'll see next week) .
So I will have the PHB on Beyond next week and right now I'll use my 20% welcome discount on Xanathar's + Tasha's (can't hurt). As far as I know on Cyber Monday there will be another sale (probably) so I still have some time to think about what other books might be worth buying, at this stage, here on Beyond.
As for D&D beyond I've got PHB (50% off with the coupon from the Essential Kit), Xanathar's and Tasha's on the Cyber week sale. I guess for now I'm all set.
P.S. It did unlock the entire Essential Kit bundle.

thanks again.
if you're not going to DM right away, i wouldn't recommend the MM and DMG...I'd digest this stuff first:

Guide to the Five Factions (PWYW)
Deck of Decks
Thanks a lot, that's a great list of resources.
I've just treated myself to the following X-mas gift: D&D Core Rules Gift Set
