Is multi-classing in Devotion Paladin (Good) and Divine Soul Sorceror redundant and inefficient? After all, they both seem to be the respective "stock up on cleric spells without actually taking cleric" sub-classes.
Thematically, it makes perfect sense for my backup character. But i'm trying to be more optimal.
(Oath of Vengeance makes little sense with the concept, sadly.)
Devotion Paladin gives you access to some Cleric spells that Paladins don't normally get, but not Spiritual Weapon or Spirit Guardians, which are generally considered the best cleric spells. So in that regard, there's not much redundancy. Sorcerer actually plays a little nicer with Paladin... the extra spell slots of taking levels in a full-caster class are nice to have, and with something like Quicken Spell you can still attack and cast a spell in the same turn. Overall they seem to be a solid combination... think of the Cleric spells you get from your Oath spells not as redundancies, but as open room to pick a greater variety of Divine Soul spells. If nothing else, it gives you more opportunities to fit Sorcerer Spells into your repertoire... if you already learn Lesser Restoration just for being a Paladin, there's no need to waste one of your spells-known from Sorcerer on that.
