Playing a variant human Gloomstalker. (12/16/14/12/14/8) Took crossbow expert as my Feat, and the DM allowed me to start play with a hand crossbow. By level 3, i was already making 3 attacks on the first round of combat, all from a short distance. (Main Attack, Dread Ambusher Attack, Bonus Action - Attack with the hand crossbow.)
So its going okay, so far.
Just hit level 4. My original plan was to take Sharpshooter, but now i'm thinking I just want to get that +2 to dexterity.
Go for the +2 Dex. That's attack, damage, AC, and initiative all together. If the campaign makes it to 8th, you can pick up Sharpshooter, and that feat is better the higher your dex is.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Good call. Although i'm thinking of multi-classing after level 5.
Generally it's good to spend your first ASI or two bumping your main attack stat. I'd especially say that if you're looking at Sharpshooter down the line, since you want a high mod to offset the to-hit penalty when you make the power attack with it.
I'd take +2 ASI it affect all DEX based attack and damage modifier, initiative, saving throw and ability check which will increase by one.
The Sharpshooter feat i prefer taking down the road once my main score is 20 as long range is rarely a factor, cover can usually be overcome by re-positioning and the -5/+10, while powerful, is anooying to me as i hate to miss due to it.
If in the combats you have had until now, you had a lot of problems with range or cover that could not be avoided by moving first, then taking Sharpshooter first might be the better option; If not... maxing your main stat is always a good choice, unless there's a feat your really want to take advantage off as soon as possible.

Should i really wait until I get my Dex to 20? If I do that, I'm not going to be able to get Sharpshooter until Level 12 at the earliest, assuming i go exclusively Ranger.
(I could get it to 11 if I went Ranger 5 / Fighter 6, I suppose.)

You don't have to if you prefer to have the Sharpshooter feat before that. It's definitely more fun anyways, but as we say DEX is King for a reason! The return on investment is greater for Dex-based character than others because it affect more aspect of the game than other ability scores and is one of the most common save so all in all probably more effiicent.
The difference in performance from going from 16 dex to 18 dex is more than the difference from 18 to 20. And there's a ways between 4th and 8th level so you can wait and see whether you find yourself really wishing you had that extra +1 a lot or if you decide you'd rather get Sharpshooter's stuff without committing to either yet.

Piercer is also an option.
Thoughts?

I'd still stick with the dex boost- in my experience, getting your primary attack stat up to 18 as soon as possible is always a good plan.

The plus 2 Dex will also (assuming you chose Dex based skills) improve your chosen ranger skills, stealth, perception etc
