I'm rolling my favorite race and new class option up and I'm pretty excited about it! I just have some issues with picking a build. I'm stuck between sword and board and archery. Both I plan to take a level dip in fighter to enhance but aside from that I can't choose. I'm coming in at level 6 with the following stats and invocations before my ASI's and after racials:
Str - 10
Dex - 17
Con - 13
Int - 12
Wis - 12
Cha - 19
Invocations - Armor of Shadows, Thirsting Blade, Improved Pact Weapon
Any build tips going forward or thoughts on the merits of archer vs Sword and shield? (PS I know Armor of Shadows is sub optimal, but it's a heavy flavor and roleplay choice for the character)
I’d go with the sword and shield combo. Your AC will be 18, which lets you hold your on as a front line melee fighter, and you’ll still have Eldritch Blast for those times when you’re forced to make a ranged attack.
Improved pact weapon actually lets you use your weapon as a spell casting focus it's really neat so you don't need warcaster for the material componets aspect

Correct, but Eldritch Blast is just Verbal and Somatic. Having a spell casting focus only covers the Somatic when the spell also has a material component requirement.
It is a common homebrew to have the focus cover non-material somatic uses as well, it mostly depends on the DM.
each round you get one socalled "free action" to either drop an item, draw a weapon og sheathe a weapon as a part of your move or attack option. So basicly you can be wearing a shield and wielding a sword when casting. Sheathe sword, cast spell, wait for next round, draw sword, attack with sword. Boom.

Keep in mind that with both hand full you won't be able to cast Eldritch Blast with out the War Caster feat or a homebrew solution.
If you decided to go with a two-handed weapon then it could be assumed you can just take your other hand off the weapon to have a free hand.

I'm not sure about 5e, but in 3.5e sheathing your weapon provoked a attack of opportunity
In 5e sheathing a weapon does not provoke an attack of opportunity, so the tactic should work fine.
