The “Wonders of the Multiverse” Unearthed Arcana provided a staggering amount of concepts, lumped together in a single release…everything from giants & runes, modrons & planar feats, and even a cleric subclass centered around prophecy.
But the most curious things I noticed were the “Cartomancy” feat, as well as the spells focused around The Deck of Many Things.
Considering that the Runecarver Wizard subclass got broken down into feats, it made me wonder if the reverse could happen…a “reverse uno card” scenario, if you will, where a class might receive a subclass based around the art of Cartomancy.
For a Wizard subclass, I picture something like a Wild Magic Sorcerer, where the wizard draws from an enchanted deck depicting chance or fortune, which bestows a buff to themselves or their magic in some way. Visually, I’m thinking something like the Zoltar fortune telling machine. XD
There is a ripe opportunity for a Bard subclass, as well…perhaps centered around using gaming sets for magical effects that provide a bonus to using Bardic Inspiration (dice to re-roll Bardic Inspiration, chess set for free movement, deck of cards for re-rolling attack rolls against them, etc…). It’d give the Bard a stage magician flair.
What are some thoughts around a Cartomancy-themed subclass? What would it look like for a Wizard or a Bard subclass?
I played a character once focused around card magic, he was an illusionist wizard who had low con and str and all of the spells were forms of card magic and his spellbook and focus were a deck of cards with spells inscribed on them, though he had more than one deck. For example, magic missile was throwing a few cards and minor illusion was making an image that later falls apart into cards.
