I think it will be it will be Death Domain Cleric and Oathbreaker Paladin from DMG, because they will want the sample subclasses in the DMG to actually be usable this time. Arcana Domain Cleric, and Battlerager Barbarian from SCAG, because they haven’t been reprinted and could fill gaps in the PHB. College of Whisper Bard, Circle of the Dreams Druid, Horizon Walker Ranger and Divine Soul Sorcerer from XGE, to even out the subclass selections and add variety. I didn’t pick fan favorite Gloomstalker because I think they will keep it to sell a later book. I also don’t believe they would put Valor and Swords Bard in the same book. Divine Soul let’s them play with the new spell list method. Anyway what are your predictions?
this is all just speculation at this point, some classes might even be losing some subclasses, it's quite possible for wizards actually. Since the note is 48 subclasses ans there is 12 classes, it's not impossible that they might go for 4 subclasses for each class.
I don't think Oathbreaker is likely, there still needs to be a DMG example and that'll probably remain that.
Divine Soul sorcerer is possible, I think hexblade warlock is also potentially possible given it's fame and infamy but we will have to see.
How many subclasses are there in SCAG? . .. ... Quick count shows 12, though a few of those are sus as hell. Still. Expect the majority of "new" subclasses to be gussied-up entries from SCAG as Wizards continues to discretely bury its shame and slowly reprint SCAG out of existence.

Yeah I was thinking that as well but there is no reason to redo the purple dragon knight because the fighter has 3 choices already, there is also 2 monks in there long death and sun soul but phb monk has 3 choices already as well. My belief is that their goal will be a least 3 sub classes for everyone but wizard and cleric who get 8 schools and 8 domains. That’s 46 in the phb and then we will playtest the two from the dmg bringing us to 48 total.
No 1/3 classes, use other other methods similar to psi points; more dragon monk than elemental monk.
"Simple" subclass option listed first. I'd love to see a warlord fighter option, but doubt it'll happen, or just get folded into battlemaster again.
I like your selections but I doubt Wizards get less than the 8 schools and Clerics get less than 7 domains. My thoughts are they will up Cleric to 8 by adding that arcana domain from SCAG, then all other classes will get 3 totaling 46 classes in the 1dnd phb. The other two playtest classes will be the two for the DMG.
The current PHB is in no way evenly divided and they have had almost 10 years to even things out but haven't even tried. I have no reason to suspect that they will simply divide 48 subclasses evenly between the 12 classes.

I agree. I think it will not be even, but I do probably think there will be more than 2 options per class.
2 paths, 2 colleges, 2 circles, 2 (ranger) archetypes, 2 bloodlines. That is probably makes those classes feel much more limited than the others (though, all but cleric and wizard have only 3 choices).

I don’t think it will be even. Wizards 8, Clerics 8, everyone else 3 each for the playtest. That’s 46 for the new PHB. If something doesn’t survive playtest it will be cut and the number in the final 1dnd PHB will drop. The other 2 to be playtested will come from the DMG most likely. There is also the possibility that it is 48 playtestable things for the phb and they don’t expect them all to make it. This all just having fun theory crafting and hoping. We have no clue. If anyone guesses correctly that can come back to this and say “I TOLD YOU SO!!”
I really, really hope if they do the 8 Wizard School subclasses again, they think them through more than they did in the 2014 PHB.
I think that is the Subclass UA I am looking forward to the most because that is the one I have the most to complain about lol.
Well, Sorcerer, but that is a whole class issue.
Hot take: If Portent is in Divination Wizard again, it should be the 6th level feature and not the 2nd level feature. That way, if you want those superlicious foretelling rolls, you have to actually commit to the subclass.
Abjuration is actually my favourite of the original 8 Wiz subclasses because it actually rewards you for playing abjuration spells and the Arcane Ward is just really neat to use. Also being better than everyone else at using counterspell and dispel magic at higher levels is *chef's kiss*.
Flaw is that counterspell is weaker now with the way they are doing monster stat blocks. Counterspell will need a rework.
They did say they're reworking some of the spells iirc. And given how mixed people have been about Counterspell even before they revamped spellcasting monsters and NPCs, it was probably at the top of their list for a spell to take a second look at.
Counterspell should never have had an auto-success mode nor should that mode have been upcastable.
I could see Wizards getting a subclass revamp, removing schools as subclasses and instead gaining school-specialization as a classwide feature. Sort of a 'warlock pact boon' style.

I have hope! Hope that they shall not screw other classes over in the name of wizard bias!

Honestly, I would like to see that kind of theme run through the spell school subclasses. You should have an actual incentive for specializing to make them feel different from each other, not just Fireball Wizard number 4567.
having bought DnD beyond they would have access to data like this from 2020.
When released they already say this raw data is skewed, as you can see the classes in the SRD lead the pack by a large margin, because a lot of people have made characters on DnD beyond using the free SRD to see if DnD beyond is a system they like. Some other free recourses also scored disproportiatlty high.
But I think with some data analysis they can come up with with a list of the most used subclasses look at the top list and see if there any non PHB subclasses that score so high they are moved to the PHB.

While it would be awesome to move the most used to the PHB it is more likely they would save those to sell later books. But I like the thought process. That would make a lot of people happy at release.

Except the moon druid is used more than land. Shows how much better and more interesting moon druid is.

12 classes x 4 subclasses each = 48.
Barbarian - zealot / berserker, beast / totem, storm / wild, ancestral guardian
Bard - lore, valor / sword, glamour / eloquence, whispers
Cleric - life (with bits of grave), light, knowledge, war
Druid - land, moon, shepherd/fire, healer
Fighter - Samurai/Champion hybrid, Battlemaster, Rune Knight (or otherwise pseudo-blacksmith type), Psi knight/eldritch knight/arcane arrow
Monk - open palm, elemental / dragon, ninja, kensei
Paladin - holy knight, fear-based dark knight, warden, pacifist/redemption
Ranger - hunter, beastmaster, fey wanderer / horizon walker, gloomstalker
Rogue - thief, assassin, swashbuckler, arcane trickser/soul knife
Sorcerer - dragon, abberant mind, wild, divine soul
Warlock - fiend, abberation, fae, undead
Wizard - evoker, bladesinger, necromancer, illusionist
No 1/3 classes, use other other methods similar to psi points; more dragon monk than elemental monk.

For wizards. you can reduce the number of subclasses if you combine all the schools to create the Specialist Wizard.
Level 1 (Or 3) Pick Specialist. As a specialist you pick a school. At each subclass feature level, you get a feature that matches your school choice.
If they have to make all the features to match school choices then it would still work out to be 8 subclasses worth of content.
