My level 3 Kenku GOO tomelock is about to level and I’m not sure how to proceed. For a bit of background, I am in a group of three, a samurai fighter, a life cleric and myself.
My stats are
Str 12 Dex 16 Con 14 Wis 14 Int 14 Cha 15
I’m torn between proceeding onto level 4 or multiclassing into Sorceror (possibly divine soul) or Bard. On the one hand I’d like to maybe get some different spell slots to be casting hex with, on the other hand I’m afraid my cha is a bit low and that I’ll start falling off in utility and damage. Just looking for a bit of advice from fellow warlocks, should I stay the path of the tentacle or take plunge into another class? All advice is welcome!
If you go up to 4th level as a Warlock you get an ability score increase which is incredibly powerful. You’ll also learn another leveled spell and another cantrip, but the ASI is more important.
I’d suggest increasing your Charisma to 16 which will give you a +1 to hit, to damage with your Eldritch Blast, and to your spell saving throw difficulty.
You'll have another +1 available to increase another ability. I’d use it to increase something that you’re likely to need for saving throws, and then at 8th or 12th level take the Resilient feat in that ability to get another +1 in that ability plus proficiency in saving throws. Constitution comes to mind for making Concentration checks.
I'm with Tim. Go and get level 4th and get the ASI boost for the reasons he mentioned.
As far as level 5, it depends on how much of a dip we are talking about for some extra spell slots, and what spells you want to shore up. Bard/Sorc work well with Cha, but you could do cleric as well, which allows for swapping of a decent number of prepared spells, plus armor proficiencies (light, Medium and Shields).
Now, this does assume that you are going to stay a Warlock, and only dip. You could also stop leveling a warlock and go down another path to the end. If you did that, I'd bite the bullet, and go down the Sorc path now, even though it would be level 7 before your first ASI. That is mostly to allow you get 9th level spells with some flexibility someday.
With a Charisma of 15, I'd focus on that first. Personally, I'd use Level 4 to go Cha +1 and Con +1, then at Level 8 go Cha +2 to make it 18, and at Level 12 I'd take Resilient(Con). It'll get your Con to 16 for some extra HP, and it'll boost your Con saves, which is always good. Failing a Con save, especially at higher levels, SUCKS OUT LOUD. Plus, with so few spell slots, you don't want to lose concentration on your spells.
