As a PC we recently had a villain who took off over a canyon on a giant hippogriff. Say I was to hit the rider with an eldritch blast with the Grasp of Hadar invocation. If he wasn’t holding on securely to the mount, would he take still take falling damage if I pulled him backward off the mount? Or would I just suspend him midair and maintain the grasp?
Variables aside, I would rule in favor of the fall damage over the mid-air suspension if you could successfully yank someone off of their mount like that. General game mechanics will likely fall into favor of that outcome also, since there isn't anything specifically stating that Grasp of Hadar is a contested/concentration spell bonus.
The fall damage would depend on how high off the ground they are and if they have reactions to mitigate or negate such damage. I don't think Grasp of Hadar applies as a consistent hold like a grapple. If it did, that would probably require a contested check each round to maintain it, or maybe concentration from the caster. That being said it is in a straight line toward you, so you couldn't choose to yank them off and then slam them into the ground, or something else to that effect. After the Grasp, the falling affect would gain ruling from the normal mechanics already in place, unless another outside force manipulated that as well.
