Hey all. Currently in the making of a new character- a fallen aasimar Great Old One warlock with pact of the tome. I’m struggling to think of backstory ideas. All I have so far is that they’re very into researching and investigating the paranormal (e.g monstrosities, undead etc). This will be for a Curse of Strahd campaign alongside a paladin, a rogue and a fighter therefore I am the only arcane caster.
I have a half idea of slowly making them go either mad/insane over the campaign due to the nature of the Great Old One (also, what even is a great old one specifically?) or pull themselves out of their low point and take some cleric multiclassing.
Great old ones are creatures of the far realm, who are warped and stuff.
Background: while reading ancient tomes, they discovered a strange ritual. Curious as to what it did, they performed it. At the end of it, a horrible creature appeared and spoke to him. None other than the creature and the aasimar know what was spoken, but this much is known: after the meeting, the aasimar had strange symbols on his shoulders, and a staff of otherworldly magics. It is twisted and made of black wood, stronger than iron. The same runes as on his shoulders adorn it, a a horrible stone tops it, flashing purple and green.
I hope this helped.

Your welcome. I purposely left out what the creature is, as that is up to you. I was going to use the Thrax, the behemoth from dauntless. The music for it definitely says 'great old one', but you may have no interest in that.

Maybe a crazed beholder, who managed to get enough power to break through to the far realm.
Or an evil wizard that has scoured the world for runes of power, and has given some to the aasimar.
Or maybe a dragon that has been exposed to the magic of the far realm, like a shadow dragon.
Or a giant wolf, called the blood wolf. They have been imprisoned in the far realm, and are using the aasimar as a way to influence the world, trying to return it to its wild state. They actually care about the aasimar though.

I’ll look into it! Any more ideas for that the entity could be from experience/inspiration?
