I'm a new player and the group I'm joining needs me to make a lvl 20 character I'll b making a Hexblade warlock maybe multiclass into Sorcerer or Paladin I'm allowed 1 legendary and 2 less than legendary I'm taking Staff of magi and peregrine mask any advice on possible multiclass or 3ed magic item (leaning towards tome of leadership and influence)
Need a little more info, what pact are you planning on using? Are you a melee Hexblade or a ranged Hexblade? What sort of role are you trying to play in your party?
How deep of a multiclass are you looking at? Just a small dip or something more.
Going over your other picks I would drop Eldritch Spear, it sounds great in theory but I don't ever see your DM letting your party initiate combat from 300 ft away. Maddening Hex is ok if you got no other use for your bonus action, but seeing as Hexblade's Curse, Hex as well as moving the spell after something dies all use your bonus action I'm not sure how often you'll actually do damage with Maddening Hex. Invocations I recommend are ones that let you cast spells at will without spending spell slots like Misty Visions and Shroud of Shadow. These will help supplement your small pool of spell slots between short rests. Also are you planning on using a shield? If you are then depending on whether the DM lets you use your Staff of the Magi as a arcane focus or not you may want to take Improved/Ultimate Pact Weapon as well.
Just had a little brainstorm about your possible multiclass options. I would suggest taking at least 6 levels in Paladin. The reason is simple, you do not ever want to get mind controlled while you have a Staff of the Magi. Best case scenario is you lose your staff, worse case scenario TPK by retributive strike lol.
If you want a possible build then I think maybe taking 8 levels of Oathbreaker Paladin with 12 Hexblade would be a very solid choice. The Paladin multiclass gives you the following: heavy armor proficiency, bonus to saving throws equal your charisma modifier, backup healing with lay on hands and cure wounds, double smite goodness, immunity to disease, a fighting style and the Oathbreaker Aura of Hate gives you another 5 damage to your melee hits. This combined with Lifedrinker means each swing you do deals 10 additional necrotic damage. Paladins also get an Extra Attack at 5th level freeing up your Thirsting Blade invocation. 8 levels of Paladin also mean you get 5 ASI to play around with.
Oathbreaker also fits the theme of a Paladin/Warlock multi as a character that turned his back on his oath in order to form a eldritch contract.
The cost of multiclassing is you lose your 7th ,8th and 9th level Mystic Arcanums (although if you sacrifice 1 ASI you could go 7 Levels Paladin 13 Warlock and get your 7th level Arcanum back). Your max warlock spell slots become 3 instead of 4. And you lose your level 14 Hexblade ability. Oh and you lose Eldritch Master but that ability is kinda meh anyway lol.
If you do want to play this build make sure your first level is Paladin, otherwise you will not get heavy armor proficiency. If I were to build this character, the ASIs would be as follows: use 2 to max your Charisma, take Warcaster and Polearm Master feats, leaving a free choice for you to customize the character with or forego if you want the 7 Paladin 13 Warlock split.
