So I am a well-seasoned DM compared to many, and pride myself on diving deep into backstories of my characters and intertwining it within my world.
One of my players FINALLY decided to play a Warlock, and I could not be more excited to RP it for him. However, they chose the Genie patron, and to me it’s an interesting challenge because I feel the genie patron is EXTREMELY present at all times. I mean their home is being held by the player, and they eventually can even hide out IN the vessel with the genie..
How do you play your genie patron for your players, and make them feel present, but not as if they would be in the normal mix of things (combat, NPC interaction, etc.) However, after using a roll table, the genie is social, so popping out and mingling with the group seems okay from time to time when they make camp (maybe a time constraint on how long they can be out of the lamp?)
Initial thought is playing it as “I am only as powerful as my master allows me to be. So as you gain strength, so do I! I also need to be focused on giving you my power so you can fight, so I can’t fight alongside you.” Thoughts?
I'm normally anti-warlock, but I must admit the Genie Patron appeals to me as a player. I'm considering working the concept that my master and I have swapped places--meaning I'm now imprisoned so he can roam free. Is my power my reward? Does he "pay" me for this service? Dunno...seems fun though. Additionally, I'm thinking it would be cool to RP it as if another player wears my "ring" and they are my master. Who said they have to realize I can freely exit my "lamp". :)
I'm actually playing a genie warlock in the campaign I'm in. Though the genie is a family patron and a Marid, who basically saved my character's clan from extinction. He's self absorbed, self centered, and pragmatic.
But know, because saved these people, they will be the most loyal of followers. So he grants them full autonomy, so long as they dont betray him.
My character in relation with her patron is a young girl, and will frequently call him a crotchety old man. But like her predecessors before her, will not abandon him.
So in contrast to the whole genie's being the servants. The genie is the master. If you dont want the genie to be in the middle of the fight, try going that angle.

Not sure this will help but I have an ongoing Marid patron I'm using to tie up a few loose ends in my campaign.
