Another one of those posts that may have already been asked but I can't find it.
So I'm on my second go-around with a necromancer (first one died early due to reasons) and I'm still stuck on a question concerning reanimations. After looking through it, it seems Danse Macabre is the only reanimation spell that doesn't specify the corpse be humanoid. Suppose I want to animate an animal corpse, is there a way to do that RAW and I'm just missing it or is it just one of those things I need to talk to my DM about?
So the humanoid corpse qualifier is only on the zombie description of the Animate Dead spell, not the skeleton one. So if you wanted to create a zombie squirrel, no dice. If you wanted to take a skeletal tortoise and animate it, great!...but it has the stats of a run of the mill Skeleton.
The spell True Polymorph, ironically, is what you're looking for. As long as the specific undead you are looking to create (e.g. undead t-rex) is cr 9 or below, then you can concentrate for 1 hour on your creation, and you have a (semi) permanent minion after using your Command Undead feature. Some things to remember; it doesn't benefit from Undead Thralls since it wasn't a necromancy spell, and it is one dispel magic away from being turned back into a pile of...whatever really, doesn't have to be a corpse.
Unfortunately, there aren't any other ways (that I'm aware of) that give you what you want.
