So they have what they call a 'Battle Mage'. I built a Human NPC, choose variant rule 'Feat First' for them, and used my first feat for the Weapon Master proficiency and at 4 will probably pick up light armor, if I deem Shield or Mage Armor too much a hassle - though I'm pretty sure you can do Mage Armor as a ritual and therefore wouldn't even need to use a spell slot.
I am about to play a mage I call a battle mage. Campaign starts tonight. I know they have the new xanathars guide to everything version, but I was not happy. I am not creating my own anything. I am a human to start and took arcane initiate feat. I used that for Cleric spells - shield of faith, light and thaumaturgy. I then go fighter at level 1. ALl levels afterwards are wizard. This gets me any armor or weapon I want. I get the fighting proficiency (I took dueling) and can heal myself for 1d10 if needed. At level 2 wizard I went abjuration. Cast Shield of faith in the beginning of combat (for free) and that kicks off the arcane ward as well. At 4th level wizard (5th level character) I am going to take combat caster so I can add in the shield while fighting all of the time and have a 18-20 ac depending on if shield of faith is up. The Arcane ward makes my HP the same as the average fighter so I can stand in the front line. Green-flame blade and shocking grasp, shield and absorb elements rounds out my abilities.
I hope this works as well as I think it will.
