I'm building an illusionist wizard for AL, but I've never really played a wizard before. I was just wondering how much priority should be given to taking resilient con feat. I currently have 14 Dex, 14 Con, and 12 Wis, but if the consensus is that proficiency in Con saves is super important I could change my stats to 13 Dex 15 Con or 15 Con 10 Wis.
My current conception is that as a wizard you shouldn't be getting hit too much (plenty of defensive spells exist) so in theory concentration checks shouldn't be a big issue. I could be totally off base though.
It's surprising how many times you will find yourself under attack - it's as if monsters don't like the person in the funny hat out back that seems to control the battlefield...
I like the resilient (con) feat, but as in all things it depends on the rest of the build. Perhaps war caster is sufficient.
And I wouldn't sacrifice DEX for CON. Lower the WIS if anything. You're proficient in WIS saves which will mitigate that one extra point to the modifier bonus.
Depends on your race. If you can go Vuman, taking Con Res feat Level 1 gives you +1 in 3 abilities.
Then depending on how you sculpt it, you can have 2 odd numbered stats to bump up at level 4. If your concentration spells are for buffing allies, then you can hold off on your int getting to 18 until level 8 if you like.
I've mostly rejected V. Human for any build because it seems too powergamey. Almost every build guide recommends (usually highly) a variant human and the number of them that I see at AL games turns me off from them. Also, I play a human in real life and generally don't want to play one in a fantasy world. That being said, if I legitimately wanted to play a human I would probably play a V. Human because it is so mechanically superior to the standard Human.
For this character I'm going with a Githyanki. It's AL so stats are point buy. Unfortunately the Githyanki have that useless +2 Str, but the extra skill and medium armor proficiency is nice. I really like the flavor of the psionics on these races even if the spells are not great. Casting spells without any components is awesome. The stats are currently Str 10, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 16, Wis 12, Cha 8. Because of the armor, I'll never put Dex over 14. That was why I was considering dropping Dex to 13 and raising Con to 15, but that would mean also taking resilient Dex. It literally just occurred to me though that you can only take the resilient feat once and not once per stat. So, that plan is out.
I may just drop my Wis to 10 or be satisfied ultimately with a 15 Con. I'm still not sure what to do.
Yeah. Vuman is one of the most powerful races in AL. My Divination wizard is one. He took Lucky as the level 1 feat. I did give him Con Res feat at level 8. Here's the base stats for him if you want to be able to get the con res feat at some point.
8 14 14 15 12 8.
I my +1 were in con and int. At level 4 I took +2 int.
My last two characters were normal humans. The feat at first level is nice, but so is increasing every ability score by 1, especially with a point buy when you're playing a class that depends on multiple ability scores.
I think I've decided to abandon my desire to play an illusionist and opt for a transmuter. It both gives me the Con save proficiency I was having trouble fitting in and I think it fits better with my character concept (ex-military engineer corp type guy). Thanks for all the help everyone.

Ah, the Fullmetal Alchemist approach? :)
I've been wanting to create those types of characters in DnD. Edward Elric and Roy Mustang are easy. Transformation and Evocation Wizards, respectively.
Alex Louis Armstrong is a tricky one though... The closest one would be a way of the four elements monks and try to focus on thunder spells.

But again depends on your build.
Storm King's Thunder - Ink, Elven Bladesinging Wizard
Core City: APbPA - Ormond, Human Twilight Cleric
The Inferno - BG:Dia - DM
