To initially summon the familiar it takes an hour and this can be done using a ritual right? So not consuming a spell slot and doesn't need to be prepared?
Once I've summoned the familiar they're just around, right? Living their best life and doing their thing? There's no duration on them sticking around?
Now - I can dismiss my familiar, once found and summoned, to a pocket dimension using an action. In order to bring them back do I need to spend the hour summoning them again, or can I bring them out of the pocket dimension with an action?
Is there a difference between the initial act of finding your familiar by casting the 1 hour spell and dismissing/summoning your existing familiar from the pocket dimension?
1- Yes, the initial summon takes one hour using a spell slot and being prepared OR can be cast as a ritual, which takes 1 hour and 10 minutes, and does not spend slot and does not need to be prepared. Note that either way, the spell needs a brass brazier and consumes 10gp worth of coal, incense and herbs.
2- Yes, they stick around indefinetely, provided they're not killed.
3- The spell gives two ways to dismiss it:
3a - "As an action, you can temporarily dismiss your familiar. It disappears into a pocket dimension where it awaits your summons.[...] As an action while it is temporarily dismissed, you can cause it to reappear in any unoccupied space within 30 feet of you." I believe this sentence is clearer this way. 3b - "Alternatively, you can dismiss it forever." If you do this, you will need to re-cast the initial spell again to get a new familiar, if you want it back.
4- Yes, the initial spell summons up a spirit to take the form of an animal and be your familiar indefinitely, while the others are just a quick action to make you familiar temporarily disappear and reappear.
Another thing of note is that if you cast the spell again while your familiar is alive, you can choose to change his form/stats into another one of the possible choices.
I have a follow up. I have an Arcane Trickster character. Now if I temporarily dismissed my familiar. Would I have to use another spell slot to summon it back?

No. You just need to spend an Action to bring it back if it is temporarily dismissed.
Damn, you right... I missed that part of the wording in the description. Oh well, what's an extra 10 min on top of an hour? Thanks for the clarification

I'm confused about Find Familiar.

Let's try to clear that up.

Brilliant, that's what I thought/hoped for. Thanks Giacobbo!

No. You just need to spend an Action to bring it back if it is temporarily dismissed.
What if it's temporarily dismissed by being killed? Still just an action to bring them back?
If its killed then you have to recast the spell to bring it back. Killed and dismissed are 2 different things.
