I was curious if anyone was playing as either a Thurge or Lore Wizard. I am currently playing a Lore Wizard as my DM allowed it before it was deleted. I really like the Lore Wizard and I like the story behind the Thurge Wizard. I fell these sub classes could have been a great addition to the Wizard and I was just curious if anyone felt the same way or if I’m all alone in these thoughts.
I liked the idea of the Lore Wizard and what they were trying to go for, but frankly for me, it was just too powerful, and that's really about it. If its features were muted a bit, I think it'd be okay.
Thurge is cool though, and I do enjoy the flavor it brings, though I think it honestly seems more like a cleric to me then a proper wizard.
They didn't "delete" the Theurge and the Lore Wizard, they are as much a part of Unearthed Arcana as they ever were. They simply weren't included in an official product at this time.
Lore Wizard was both very powerful and versatile, and stepped pretty heavily on the Sorcerer's toes. The Theurge creates similar problems for the Cleric, since it gets some domain powers earlier than even the Cleric. I think the principle of going with War Wizard is that it is a good "generalist" without stepping too far into other classes' spheres.
They went with War Wizard because it was the most liked of the three and even it did not meet the 70% requirement but they had to include something for wizards. Besides that, Sorcerers and Warlocks can now gain divine abilities but no one is complaining of “stepping on the cleric’s toes”
Problem with the Thurge is that its exactly like a cleric in function. You choose a domain, you get Channel Divinity, and literally get portions of the Clerics class features as the wizard levels up. It'd be one thing if it just had options from the spells, but its mostly getting its exact features based on the domain. That's not even getting into the fact you get 17th level abilities at level 14 instead. Compare and contrast to both the Sorcerer and the Warlock, which while get access to the spells, still maintain their own individuality as a class and actually having unique features.

Lore Master was broken as hell, but damn, it was a neat concept. It's a shame this subclass got the axe.
You can still find the Lord Master under homebrewed subclasses.
