Ooh...I love the Haunted One background. If ever there was a way to perfectly encapsulate the experience of playing a Warlock while playing a different class, this nifty bit of character history allows you to do just that.
Which is why I like pairing it with the Wizard class. While it is true that Warlocks get Eldritch Blast, and some interesting class features depending on your Patron, there is no denying that Wizards tend to be the more versatile spellcasters. I like how Warlocks can cast 1-5 spells at their highest level, every short rest, but having their high level spells hampered to merely a single spell, single use per long rest is somewhat restricting.
Wizards can indulge many of the spells offered by the Warlock class, and with the "Haunted One" background, they can emulate much of the "flavor" of a Warlock.
Which brings me to this post...what are some of the experiences you've encountered with a Wizard who falls on the gothic side of things?
I've conjured a few interesting concepts suggested by the Haunted One background's "Harrowing Event" chart...
A dwarven wizard who dug too deep into his mine, and encountered mindflayers and aberrations that both drove him to insanity...but also opened his mind to the power of arcane magics.
A Frankenstein-inspired necromancer who seeks to create life...yet can only create zombies, skeletons, and ghouls (he keeps trying, though).
A divination halfling who encounters a fallen meteorite, a fragment of an evil star, which causes him to foresee terrible visions of doom he wishes to prevent, ala "portents".
Quite literally, a fiend patron offers the wizard a tome that lets him learn magic, which become his spellbook. This is his "gothic trinket".
A sentient spellbook, haunted by strange entity from the Shadowfell, hungers for knowledge, and compels the wizard to seek magic to add to the book in exchange for power.
These are but a few ideas I've toyed with.
