I posted here a while back with my frustrations regarding the lack of focus I feel my wizard has due to not really being able to play out the conjurer fantasy I'd first imagined and afterwards picking "the best spells" instead of the most thematic spells..
Anyway... I'd come to an agreement with our DM that I was to be allowed to use the psionic wizard in the recent UA... it's not too far from how I'm steering my character and I really like being the xavier of the group.
Sadly the psionic wizard has been laid to rest, and my DM and I both agree that I shouldn't be playing a subclass that has been officially abandoned before I even do the switch.
So now I'm thinking.. what do you guys think is the most fitting arcane tradition for a "mind" themed wizard? For reference I've exclusively chosen spells that affect peoples minds or involved lifting stuff with your mind... I guess that's closer to a jean grey than an Xavier... But yea illusion spells that actually manifest an image in the world such as major image are a no go, but phantasmal force is great.
I was thinking the diviner...But I'd like to hear your suggestions.... Perhaps also ideas for reflavoring certain spells.. So far I've been allowed to reflavor phantom steed to a cushion of force
There is not really a good wizard subclass for what you are describing in particular, really anything could work fine, except Necro or evoker. I would say enchanter or conjurer, for the mind affecting or telekinesis.
I can see the enchanter in theme.. although their actual features seem really underwhelming... But conjuration? Seems to me that conjuration wizards Are supposed to be focused on teleportaion and not mind control
The only mind-oriented subclasses are Enchanter or Illusionist and you are more mind controlly, so Enchanter is your best fit.I have no idea at all why necro or conjuror are suggested by another poster, not even remotely close to mind-spells.
Now, two features are quirky and lacking, but the other two are enough to fit the theme. One is Split Enchantment which really helps saves slots by letting you target two if your spell normally targets one. It's basically an enchantment only Sorc Twinned Spell and it's free. This is very useful at later levels for spells of higher level like Dominate Person and Modify Memory as it certainly helps to conserve those higher spell slots.
Alter Memories is where things serious, since spells like Charm Person no longer let them know you charmed them and you can erase memories under effect of any enchantment spell which includes Hold Person (you can now do Professor X's fave trick from the movies - stop them moving AND stop them remembering anything that happened during that time), and Suggestion.
When you get to 18th level you could have spells like Charm Person and Suggestion being cast at-will and both targeting two people at once - giving you a lot of freedom for controlling people without spending spell slots and you get to make them forget what you did to them. It really plays to the strengths of mind control.
For telekinesis no subclass best fits this. "Telekinetic" affects could easily draw spells from Transmutation and Evocation with a little backup from Abjuration. However, you could flavour an Abjurist's Arcane Ward as a telekinetic barrier if want. But since your focusing on the mind control, it seems, Enchanter is really the best choice. The Hypnotic Gaze will be extremely situational but could have uses, maybe. And the Instinctive Charm is borderline useless. So, it's not the best subclass until you're 10th level, but it's the only thing that really fits a "mind controller" mage and don't want to use illusions.

I certainly agree that the enchanters lvl 10 ability is really cool.. lvl 14 is a cool too.. but far as I remember only quite low level charm spells says the target knows.. I mean it's cool and all but I feel like it should've been at lvl 6 or something...
Real issue is that we're half way through lvl 7 so 10 and 14 are months if not years away, and I feel like the lvl 2 and 6 features are basically useless.. :/.. Think it's kinda lame to have a subclass where I don't actually benefit from it for the longest time. Aside from diviner I feel like most wizard subclasses are extremely underwhelming in early to mid levels because the base class is so strong.
I feel like a sorceror would fit the concept much better... but that'd require a stat switch my dm is not a fan of (understandably)
I would say Enchanter or Divination are the only 2 subclasses that would embody a "Psionic Wizard". And this is why.
Divination is the most fitting because Portent is odd. Unlike many subclass abilities it's less of a study thing and more just something you can do. Spells may enhance your divining ability but Portent implies a more psionic origin given it's your own mind's increased awareness to potentiality. Its LITERALLY the "Psychic" as in the definition regarding fortune tellers. Third Eye as an ability also feels pretty psionic given the "Mind's Eye" idea is based off the enhancement of our own perceptions.
But for a Professor X feel... I'd probably say that Enchanter is the closest thing you'll get. It even has modify memories which if you know Dark Phoenix is a very controversial ability and practice Xavier utilizes. I'd argue there's nothing wrong with talking to your DM about changing some of the flavor of the subclass abilities as long as the mechanics are kept the same. Hypnotic Gaze could easily be flavored as a mental control instead (aka less Poison Ivy and more Professor X). Instinctive Charm is harder, I'd go back to that mind control aspect.
