Wondrous Item, rare

"Even the gods knew better than to let Durnir Frostbraid go anywhere without chilled ale and a way to weaponize beard icicles." — Dwarven Proverb

This legendary beard, said to have once belonged to Durnir Frostbraid, the divine brewer of the Everice, is both gloriously lush and inexplicably functional. Upon attunement, the beard replaces or entwines with your own facial hair, forming an animated frost-touched braid adorned with shimmering runed clasps and small, humming gems of frozen starlight. Its chilly breath mists the air even in the desert.

Magical Storage & Preservation

  • Interior Space: The beard contains two extradimensional compartments:

    • One Chilled (approx. 4°C / 39°F)

    • One Frozen (approx. -18°C / 0°F)

  • Each can hold up to 3 cubic feet or 30 pounds of material. The beard always weighs 5 pounds, regardless of contents.

  • Preservation: Items stored inside do not decay, spoil, or thaw, making it ideal for:

    • Preserving magical ingredients

    • Transporting temperature-sensitive potions

    • Carrying ice-cold ale kegs

Features & Abilities

  • Dwarven Fridge Logic: You always know the precise contents of your beard. As a bonus action, you may summon any item within it directly to your hand.

  • Cold Snap (1/short rest): With a dramatic whip of icy beard strands, unleash a 15 ft. cone of freezing mist.

    • Creatures in the area must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw.

    • On a fail: take 3d6 cold damage and 1d4 piercing damage from any frozen rations or beverages launched as projectiles.

    • On a success: half damage, no piercing.

  • Divine Chill: While the beard compartments are sealed, you gain resistance to fire damage. If both compartments are open in a fire-dominant area (e.g., volcano, fire plane), the beard emits a smug divine hum and radiates a 10 ft. aura of cool air.

  • Breathable Space: One Medium or smaller creature can fit inside a compartment. Breathing creatures survive for 10 ÷ number of creatures (min. 1 minute) before suffocating begins.

Planar Risks & Mishaps

  • Overload or Damage: If the beard is overloaded, pierced, or torn, it ruptures and is destroyed. Contents are scattered into the Elemental Plane of Ice. The ambient area is momentarily flash-frozen (GM discretion).

  • Inversion: Turning the beard inside out ejects its contents violently. All creatures within 5 feet must succeed on a DC 12 Con save or suffer cold shock (disadvantage on their next attack or check).

  • Planar Catastrophe: Placing the beard inside another extradimensional space (e.g., Handy Haversack, Portable Hole) causes both items to be destroyed. A one-way rime gate to the Elemental Plane of Ice opens, sucking in all creatures within 10 feet (DC 15 Strength save to resist).

Optional Curse (DM Flavor)

Each dawn, roll a d20. On a 1, the beard subtly attempts to refrigerate your emotions, causing disadvantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks until your next long rest. (This may manifest as passive-aggressiveness, excessive stoicism, or spontaneous ice puns.)
