Staff, artifact (requires attunement by a Wondrous Item (staff), artifact (requires attunement by a Wizard))

Description

This legendary staff pulses with an inner light, its surface etched with shifting arcane runes that glow softly in the presence of magic. Once wielded by archmages who bent the Weave itself to their will, the Aegis Staff of Thariel is both a font of inexhaustible power and a bastion against the onslaught of hostile spells.

Properties

  • Requires attunement by a Wizard.

  • Grants a +3 bonus to spell attack rolls and spell save DC while attuned.

  • Functions as a magic arcane focus.

  • The staff has 75 charges. It regains 6d8 + 20 charges each dawn.

  • The staff can store spells up to a total of 12 levels. Stored spells retain your spell save DC and spell attack bonus.

  • The staff continuously emits the effects of Detect Magic and Comprehend Languages while held.

Abilities

Absolute Spell Absorption (Reaction)

When you are targeted by a spell or caught in the area of a spell effect, you can use your reaction to attempt to absorb the spell.

  • Make an Arcana check with a DC of 10 + the spell’s level.

  • On a success, the spell has no effect on you, and you regain charges equal to twice the spell’s level.

  • On a natural 20, the spell is absorbed and added to the staff’s spell storage if there is sufficient capacity, even if it is not a spell you know or have prepared. You can later cast this stored spell once using the staff, using your spell attack modifier and save DC.

  • You cannot absorb Wish, Divine Intervention, or spells cast by deities or overdeities unless the DM rules otherwise.

Ritual Transmutation (10 Minutes)

You can spend 10 minutes performing a ritual to channel your prepared or known spells into the staff. For each spell you contribute, choose one of the following:

  • Store the Spell for Later Use: The spell occupies levels in the staff’s spell storage (up to 12 total levels). The stored spell can be cast by you or another creature holding the staff without expending a spell slot.

  • Convert the Spell into Raw Charges: The spell is not stored but converted into charges equal to twice the spell’s level (expending the spell slot normally). These charges fuel the staff’s abilities.

Convert Charges into Spell Slots (Bonus Action)

You can expend charges from the staff to regain expended spell slots. The cost per slot level is as follows:

Spell Slot Level Charge Cost
1st 1 charge
2nd 3 charges
3rd 5 charges
4th 7 charges
5th 9 charges
6th 12 charges
7th 15 charges
8th 18 charges
9th 22 charges
  • There is no limit on the number of spell slots you can restore this way, limited only by available charges.

Font of the Weave (1/Long Rest)

As an action, you can invoke the staff’s ultimate power for 1 minute:

  • For the duration, you can cast spells without expending spell slots or staff charges.

  • The staff regenerates 5 charges per round automatically during this time.

  • Once per turn, you may cast two spells of 6th level or lower as part of the same action.

  • After the effect ends, the staff cannot regain charges until you complete a long rest.

Attunement Requirement

This staff requires attunement by a Wizard. Other spellcasters cannot attune to the staff, and attempts to wield it without proper attunement cause the staff’s magic to lash out unpredictably, potentially causing magical backlash (DM’s discretion).

Destruction

The Aegis Staff of Thariel can only be destroyed if it is simultaneously struck by the combined effects of Wish and Dispel Magic cast at 9th level by nine different archmages, performed within the heart of a dead plane.
