Weapon (maul), rare (requires attunement by a creature proficient in Maul’s or martial weapons)

You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Curse. This maul is cursed and possessed by an angered spirit. Becoming attuned to it extends the curse to you. As long as you remain cursed, you are unwilling to part with the maul, keeping it on your person at all times. While attuned to this weapon, you have disadvantage on attack rolls made with weapons other than this one.

This maul pulses with an evil power. As part of the curse, whenever you attack using this weapon, roll one die equivalent to your hit die. Whatever the outcome is, you take that much damage, and deal that much damage to whoever you attack, in addition to the damage from your regular attack. If your attack misses, you take half of the hit die damage rounded up. This hit die damage cannot be cured by healing spells or potions, and can only be removed by a long rest or other magical means, such as the Wish spell.

In addition, if you Rage or Action Surge while using this weapon, your fury heightens the power of the curse. Until the battle ends, you can score a critical on a 19 or 20, and if you do, you become Mad - you must move toward and attack the nearest creature, whether ally or not, until the battle ends. If multiple creatures are nearby, you choose who to attack. The madness ends once the battle ends.

You can break the curse in the usual ways. Alternatively, casting Banishment on the maul forces the angered spirit to leave it. The maul then becomes a +2 weapon with no other properties.

Proficiency with a Maul allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Topple. If you hit a creature with this weapon, you can force the creature to make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 plus the ability modifier used to make the attack roll and your Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the creature has the Prone condition.

Notes: creature proficient in Maul’s or martial weapons, Heavy, Two-Handed, Topple
