Weapon (whip), very rare (requires attunement by a a wizard or sorcerer with at least 5 levels in one or both of the classes who also has a DEX of 16 or higher and has spent at least 5 years studying and practicing the yo-yo)

This battered old yo-yo is made of Fernian ash, which is a tree infused with extraplanar energy. You can use this item as a spellcasting focus. You must have at least 5 levels in either sorcerer or wizard to use this item, and it occasionally requires both hands to use for certain tricks, so if you use it offensively in its bonus action attack capacity, you may only cast cantrips or first level spells (no upcast) the rest of that turn, including reactions. If you cast a leveled spell on your turn first, you may not use the bonus action attack feature.

If you are attuned to this focus, you can summon it to your hand instantly (no action required) from anywhere on any plane of existence, and nothing - no containment, magical or otherwise - can keep it from your hand. You may also dismiss it to a private pocket plane any time you wish, no action required, but you don’t get any of its benefits if it isn’t in your hand except that you retain the ability to cast spells without it, and you retain any bonuses to spell attack and spell save DC that it imparts.

In addition to a DEX score of 16 or better and at least 5 levels in either wizard or sorcerer, attuning to this yo-yo requires your character to have at least five years of heavy practice with it explicitly as a yo-yo. You must be adept in its non-magical use before you may use it magically or martially. In the event of a disagreement over proficiency, the GM will, of course, have final say.

Being as adept as you are with a yo-yo, you can use it once per turn as a bonus action to make a melee strike against an opponent within 10 feet of yourself. This weapon should be considered a finesse weapon with the light property and the slow weapon mastery (if your table uses weapon masteries) and you are considered proficient in its use. Under no circumstance may this yo-yo ever be used for any melee attack that isn’t a bonus action, and it may only be used to make a single bonus action attack per turn.

For a BONUS ACTION attack, roll a D20 and add your spell attack bonus to hit. On a hit, the yo-yo does 1d4+DEX bludgeoning damage. If you roll a Natural 20 on the die, the target of your attack takes the normal damage (no doubling on critical hits) and then (in lieu of extra crit damage) must succeed on a CON save (the DC is your lowest spell save DC) or be stunned until the end of their next turn.

When you cast a spell that deals fire damage using this item as your spellcasting focus, you gain a +1 bonus to one damage roll of the spell. Any spell you cast using this focus (fire or otherwise) which requires somatic components may be cast utilizing the yo-yo with tricks and such, and you should describe how that looks when you do so. Be descriptive and creative.

This version of the yo-yo has 3 charges with which to cast the included spells, and the charges reset either each dawn or upon a long rest. Decide with you GM which is appropriate.

Finally, attuning to this yo-yo provides the following benefits:

  • +3 bonus to spell attacks and spell save DC
  • You gain proficiency with Woodcarver’s Tools
  • You can diffuse tensions and awkward situations thanks to the almighty power of yo-yo and the Calm Emotions spell, which you can cast at will.
  • You know the charm person spell, which you can cast once per long rest in conjunction with yo-yo tricks to distract and charm a target.
  • You know the Animate Objects spell, which you may cast once per long rest. When you cast it, the objects it animates are 2 medium objects (which can be toys which magically enlarge for the spell and then shrink back to normal size at the end of the spell) and otherwise are small toys and trinkets and other similar objects you’ve made yourself and which are either stored in your bag, hidden in your pockets/robe sleeves/wizard hat/etc, or (failing those other options) are conjured from thin air. But…carry the toys around with you. It’s much cooler that way.

Proficiency with a Whip allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Slow. If you hit a creature with this weapon and deal damage to it, you can reduce its Speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn. If the creature is hit more than once by weapons that have this property, the Speed reduction doesn’t exceed 10 feet.
