Description: This shield is forged from black, jagged iron, cold to the touch and etched with the faint image of a single, stylized chain. It feels unnaturally heavy, as if anchored to the very laws of Hell.
Properties: While holding this shield, you have a +2 bonus to your AC. In addition, it has the following properties:
Chains of Inevitability. When a creature within 5 feet of you misses you with a melee attack, you can use your Reaction to cause spectral, red-hot chains to erupt from the shield and automatically ensnare them. The creature is Restrained (no saving throw). At the end of each of its turns, the restrained creature can make a DC 15 Strength saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success.
-
Infernal Cost: When you use this reaction, you cannot use your Divine Smite feature until the end of your next turn.
-
Usage Limit: You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Searing Retribution. As an action on your turn, you can channel your divine power through the shield as an infernal conduit. Choose one creature currently Restrained by your Chains of Inevitability. You expend one Paladin spell slot, and the chains around the target glow white-hot, dealing necrotic damage.
-
The damage is 2d8 necrotic damage for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st.
Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
Notes: Bonus: Armor Class, Combat, Warding
