Wondrous Item, uncommon

Also known as “Cinderblossoms” or “Flame’s Farewell”

Description

Ash Petals are fragile, smoky-gray flowers with delicate petals that smolder faintly without ever burning away. When touched, they leave behind a soft trail of warm soot, harmless but persistent. Their fragrance is bittersweet — like campfire smoke mixed with lilac.

They only bloom where fire has claimed life, often sprouting from the remains of burnt forests, battlefields scorched by dragonfire, or the fading footprints of fire elementals. Some scholars say Ash Petals embody the balance between destruction and rebirth.

Where They Grow

  • Typically found in burnt clearings or volcanic plains after magical or natural fires.

  • Petals vanish if plucked carelessly; only a gentle hand and calm mind (DC 14 Nature or Survival check) allows one to harvest them intact.

  • Druids claim they whisper faint crackles when the wind blows, like a fading fire remembering its flames.

Uses

  1. Raw Consumption:

    • A creature may eat one whole Ash Petal to gain advantage on their next death saving throw within 1 hour.

    • Once eaten, the creature’s breath smells faintly of smoke for that time.

  2. Alchemy / Potion Brewing:

    • Used as a stabilizer in potions that channel fire or life energies (e.g., Potion of Fire Resistance, Potion of Emberheart Vigor, or Potion of Rebirth).

    • Powdered petals grant +1 to the potion’s save DC if brewed successfully (DC 16 Alchemist’s Tools check).

  3. Spellcasting Reagent:

    • Can replace costly material components (up to 50 gp value) for Revivify or Fireball, though the spell gains a smoky, ember-like appearance.

  4. Trade Good:

    • Sold for 25–50 gp per blossom, though many collectors and cults of fire gods prize them more highly.
