This heavy octagonal ring is made out of polished bronze. It is engraved with the symbol of Winterhold: Two crossed pickaxes and a snowflake. The ring is warm to the touch and radiates a faint aura of abjuration magic to those who are able to detect magic auras.

There are several Rings of the Explorer in existence. They were commonly used by scouts and underground explorers in Winterhold during the period when the mines under the town were still in use. The Ring of the Explorer was especially appreciated for its ability to protect a wearer from traps set by dark elves and other cunning subterranean foes.

The rings are Clanforged, and the recipe is only known by members of the Snödottri Clan. Clanforged weapons and items are infused with arcane powers by following a complex recipe that combines blacksmithing and magic rituals. Forging such an item takes several days and requires a fully equipped spellforge. The recipes for crafting Clanforged objects are well guarded by various dwarven clans, and many recipes have been passed down dozens of generations of blacksmiths without the slightest change. The Snödottri Clan is one of the oldest dwarven clans in Winterhold. Over the centuries, it has produced some of the finest Master Smiths that the region has seen. It is said that the Snödottri Clan was one of the first clans that mined ore where Winterhold now is situated, and that they therefore should be regarded as founders of the town. However, this claim is disputed by other old clans, including the proud Flinthelm clan. Nevertheless, the Snödottri Clan run some of the most renowned smithies in Eastern Farraway and its members have created many Clanforged items, including the famous North Star Crown.

The Ring of the Explorer is an unusual (and highly valued) item. They are still frequently used by miners as well as roaming adventurers around the land. A few rings are also in the possession of The Five, the council that governs Winterhold.
