Unlike most scrolls, the Nether Scroll of Azumar is not expended when read.
Forged in the waning days of the empire of Netheril, this artifact represents the pinnacle of arcane philosophy—a treatise not merely written about magic, but by magic itself.
Each symbol upon its living gold surface shifts like thought, reflecting and reshaping the mind that dares to read it. Many who attempt the scroll’s study are found days later, eyes glowing and minds shattered by truths too vast to contain.
To comprehend it, one must dedicate 30 consecutive days of disciplined study (at least 8 hours per day). At the end of this time, make a DC 25 Intelligence (Arcana) check.
⚙️ Study Results
On a Failure:
The scroll rejects you. Your mind fractures under the strain of forbidden insight, and you take 16d10 psychic damage. You may attempt the study again only after another 30 days of concentrated effort.
On a Success:
The scroll accepts you as a vessel of its knowledge, transforming your mind into a living extension of the Weave itself.
You gain the following benefits:
-
Your Intelligence score increases by 2, to a maximum of 22.
-
You gain advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects.
-
A stone golem manifests within 60 feet of you. It acts as your ally, obeying verbal commands that you issue (no action required). If you die, the golem collapses into dust, returning to the Weave with your final thought.
The scroll’s text becomes inert for 100 years after a successful study, its knowledge sealed until the Weave chooses another worthy mind.
🪶 Lore
Azumar was the last of the Netherese Philosopher-Mages, who believed the true nature of magic was not power but understanding.
He bound his theories into a self-aware script, ensuring that the scroll itself would decide who was capable of wielding its knowledge.
Legends claim that every mind who successfully deciphers it becomes a fragment of Azumar’s eternal consciousness—a collective of intellects preserved beyond death.
