Wondrous Item, artifact

Essence of the Cycle Eternal

“All things decay, and from decay they are born anew. This is the truth that even gods must obey.”
Aletheia, Oracle of Kruphix

Description

The Amulet of Uroborus is a circular medallion forged of blackened bronze and silver, depicting a serpent devouring its own tail. Within its hollow center, time itself churns — a swirling spiral of green and violet Nyx-light that glows faintly in the dark. When activated, nearby air freezes in silence, and fragments of reality hover weightless, as if time itself hesitates to move forward.

Once a divine focus of Aletheia, Oracle of Kruphix, it was stolen by the prophets Castor and Pollux, who twisted its powers for their own gain. The amulet now holds no allegiance, belonging to no god — only to those who dare to command the paradox of creation and decay.

Divine Function — Cycle of Creation and Decay

While attuned to the Amulet of Uroborus, you can use your action to manipulate the flow of time around an object, creature, or area within 30 feet that you can see.
Choose Reconstruction or Decay.

Reconstruction

  • You restore an object, structure, or natural formation that has been destroyed or decayed.

  • You can rebuild up to a 20-foot cube of material.

  • Magical or divine constructs require a DC 18 Intelligence (Arcana) or Wisdom (Religion) check.

  • When used on a creature at 0 HP, the creature stabilizes and regains 1 hit point.

  • You can also reattach severed limbs, restore shattered items, or mend ruined environments.

Decay

  • You rapidly corrode, age, or disintegrate nonliving matter within a 20-foot cube.

  • Against constructs or undead, make a ranged spell attack using your spellcasting modifier; on a hit, they take 4d10 necrotic damage and must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your spellcasting modifier) or be stunned until the end of your next turn.

Cost: Each use of Reconstruction or Decay expends 1 charge.

Chronomantic Pulse

As an action, you can expend 2 charges to emit a pulse of temporal distortion in a 15-foot radius sphere centered on a point within 30 feet.

  • Each creature of your choice inside must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + proficiency + your highest mental ability modifier) or be slowed (as the Slow spell) for 1 minute.

  • Objects, debris, or moving hazards within the area freeze in midair until your next turn.

  • The effect lasts concentration, up to 1 minute.

This power can stop traps, halt collapsing structures, or open combat opportunities against larger foes.

Temporal Inversion

Once per long rest, you may expend 4 charges to cast Time Stop (no components required).

When the effect ends, roll a d6:

  • On a 1, time collapses violently, and you take 8d10 force damage as the amulet drains your life to restore balance.

  • On a 6, time bends favorably; you gain true sight (60 ft.) and advantage on all Intelligence and Wisdom checks for 10 minutes.

Passive Boons

While attuned to the Amulet of Uroborus:

  • You gain resistance to force damage.

  • You are immune to magical aging.

  • You can cast Mending and Thaumaturgy at will.

  • You can sense points of temporal instability within 30 feet (areas magically altered, frozen, or decayed).

Curse — The Burden of Paradox

Mortals who tamper with eternity are eventually swallowed by it. Each time you expend a charge, roll a d20. On a 1, your memories stutter:

  • You forget the last 1d4 hours of your life.

  • For the next 24 hours, you have disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws.

If this occurs three times, your body becomes partially “out of sync” with the present:

  • You gain vulnerability to force damage.

  • When you die, you vanish entirely — erased from time. Only divine intervention can restore you.

Mythic Resonance — Uroboric Awakening

If the Amulet is brought to the Sanctuary of Kruphix and placed beneath the Eternal Eclipse, its true form awakens:

  • The amulet gains 10 charges instead of 6.

  • Reconstruction and Decay now affect areas up to a 50-foot cube.

  • Once per campaign, the wielder can reverse a single event that occurred within the last 10 minutes, rewriting fate itself.

    • This ability cannot undo death by natural aging or divine decree.

    • When used, a voice whispers: “One truth unmade demands another be born.”

    • The DM determines the ripple effects of this change.

Visual Description

The Amulet of Uroborus is a serpent-shaped pendant devouring its tail, forged from onyx and starlight metal. Its hollow core swirls with green and violet energy, like liquid time frozen in motion. When activated, particles of light and shadow drift upward as the world around it slows — the divine hush of eternity folding upon itself.

Current Status

The Amulet remains in the possession of Castor and Pollux, twin prophets who wield its fractured power to manipulate fate and rebuild temples in their image. Should the heroes defeat them, the artifact can be claimed — but every use brings the wielder closer to the edge of timeless oblivion.
