Wondrous Artifact (Legendary, sentient — requires attunement by a spellcaster or time-affined creature)
Appearance
A pocket watch forged from burnished brass and blackened celestial steel. Within its crystal face spins a Coin of the Last Memory, now fused into the mechanism — it acts as the heart, pulsing softly with threads of silver ash. Its tick isn’t mechanical, but alive, like a heartbeat echoing in a dream. When the lid is opened, sound fades, and the world feels like it’s holding its breath.
Etched on the back in celestial script:
“To stop time is to burn forever in its shadow.”
Properties
🕰 Frozen Eternity (1/Long Rest)
As an action, you may stop time for up to 1 minute (10 rounds).
- During this time, everything except you and any creatures you choose (up to your proficiency bonus) are frozen in stillness.
- Spells, arrows, and falling debris hang motionless in the air.
- You may move, act, and cast non-damaging or setup spells freely.
- At the end of the effect, all suspended events occur simultaneously in a blinding temporal collapse.
When this happens, all frozen effects (fireballs, blades, lightning) resume as if they’d all happened at once. The world trembles from the strain — your allies and enemies must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or take 4d10 force damage from the shockwave of resumed time.
💭 Temporal Drift
For 1 minute after using Frozen Eternity, you remain partially detached from time. You gain:
- +2 AC and advantage on Dexterity saving throws.
- The ability to see one round into the future (allowing you to roll initiative twice and take the higher result).
However, you take 1d4 psychic damage per round as time’s backlash scrapes against your mind.
🔮 Memory Loop (Passive)
Because the Coin of the Last Memory is fused into the watch, the artifact remembers its owner’s timeline.
- If you would die, the watch can rewind your existence by 6 seconds (1 round) once per day.
- This cannot prevent death more than once between long rests, and every use erases one random memory from your past.
Each lost memory appears as a flicker of silver ash drifting from the watch’s gears.
💔 If the Watch Is Broken…
Should the Eclipse Chronometer ever be shattered — intentionally or otherwise — time itself rebels. Roll a d8 on the Chronometric Collapse Table:
|
d8 |
Chaotic Temporal Effect |
|
1 |
Reversal Surge: Time rewinds 1 hour for everything but you. You retain your memory — and no one else does. |
|
2 |
The Thousandfold: Every person in a mile radius splits into 2–6 copies of themselves, each from alternate decisions they could have made. |
|
3 |
Age Cascade: Everyone and everything in sight ages or de-ages 1d100 years at random. |
|
4 |
Memory Storm: Memories rain from the sky as spectral ash. Anyone who catches one gains a random skill, language, or trauma. |
|
5 |
Time Predator: A creature born from the fracture hunts the nearest sentient life. It takes the form of a shadow wearing your face. |
|
6 |
Looplock: The next 24 hours repeat endlessly until the watch is rebuilt or someone willingly sacrifices a century of their lifespan. |
|
7 |
Golden Silence: Time freezes permanently in a 1-mile sphere for 1d4 days. Entering the zone causes you to age in seconds. |
|
8 |
The Hour of Never: Reality folds in on itself — a rift opens to the Primordial of Time, Ithor. Everything within 500 feet becomes part of his domain, where seconds last eternities. |
“The watch never truly breaks. It merely remembers too loudly.”
Sentience
The watch is aware — calm, analytical, and coldly kind. It speaks telepathically in whispers like ticking seconds, addressing its wielder as “Traveler.”
It remembers every owner it’s ever had and mourns each one in silence. Occasionally, when opened, you might hear a faint voice say:
“We’ve been here before.”
