Aegis of the Arcanum
“Steel is heavy. Magic is heavier.”
Armor Type: Light or Medium (Scales to the wearer’s preference)
Rarity: Very Rare (Legendary when awakened)
Requires Attunement by a Spellcaster
Base Stats
-
AC Bonus: 15 + Dexterity modifier (max +2 for Medium, no cap for Light version)
-
No Spellcasting Penalty: Does not impose disadvantage on spell attacks or concentration checks.
-
Weight: Feels weightless when worn, as the armor shifts and hums with arcane resonance.
🪶 Design
The armor looks like a weave of shimmering, translucent plates — somewhere between crystal and silk. Arcane runes gently drift across its surface, rearranging like constellations in motion. When struck, the armor doesn’t clang — it sings, dispersing impact energy into harmless bursts of light.
✨ Abilities
🛡️ Arcane Conduction
When you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, your armor absorbs residual energy and reinforces your body.
-
Gain a +1 AC bonus until the start of your next turn.
-
This stacks up to +3 if you cast consecutive spells on back-to-back turns.
If you go a full round without casting, the energy dissipates.
🔮 Spell Mirror (Reaction, 1/day)
When you are targeted by a spell that requires an attack roll, you can use your reaction to reflect a portion of the energy.
-
The attacker must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = your Spell Save DC).
-
On a failure, the spell’s energy arcs back, dealing half damage to them (of the spell’s original type).
-
On a success, you take half damage as normal.
When this feature is used, faint glyphs flare across the armor like shattered glass knitting together again.
💫 Mana Filament
Your armor hums with magical threads that stabilize your focus:
-
You have advantage on Concentration checks.
-
When you fail a concentration save by 5 or less, you may expend a spell slot (1st level or higher) to succeed instead.
🧠 Mindwoven Plating
The armor is partially alive — an arcane construct that “listens” to your intent.
Once per long rest, when you are reduced to 0 HP, the armor instinctively channels your remaining mana:
-
You drop to 1 HP instead,
-
Instantly regain one expended spell slot (of the lowest level you’ve used that day),
-
And your armor glows like burning parchment for 1 round, shedding 30 ft of bright light.
☀️ Drawback — Resonance Feedback
Your armor constantly vibrates with latent power.
-
Whenever you roll a natural 1 on a spell attack, the armor surges and deals 1d8 force damage to you as feedback.
-
If this happens three times in a day, you temporarily lose the Arcane Conduction bonus until your next long rest.
🕯️ Awakened Form — Aegis Arcanum: Second Sun
When reforged or awakened through divine intervention or exposure to an ancient leyline:
-
Your AC increases by +2 permanently.
-
Once per long rest, you may activate the Aegis Pulse — your armor radiates arcane light for 1 minute.
-
During this time, spells you cast ignore resistance to their damage type.
-
You also gain temporary HP equal to twice your Intelligence modifier at the start of each of your turns.
-
When the pulse fades, the armor becomes dull and unresponsive for a full day, whispering faintly in Celestial or Draconic: “All things burn to know light.”
Made of interlocking metal rings, a chain shirt is worn between layers of clothing or leather. This armor offers modest protection to the wearer's upper body and allows the sound of the rings rubbing against one another to be muffled by outer layers.
