Wondrous Item, legendary (requires attunement by a three days of reading and contemplating the Book.)

The Book of Travel looks like a standard small pocket book, about the size of a slim trade paperback, that has maps to and from any location in the campaign world. This includes their current state, any secret paths which have been used (and their condition), and all available routes. If the methods of travel are unusual (such as interplanar or through solid rock), a Book shows what ways are currently available and nearest places and people to hire assistance if necessary (such as if a gate spell is required). Randomly opening a Book is supposed to lead you to either where you will are most needed, where you will profit the most, or to certain death.

Each Book is sentient, but does not directly communicate with its user. It will communicate to other sentient magic items, beings from other planes, or creatures with an intelligence or charisma of over 20, but it finds most humanoids tedious. Even if it won't speak to them, it is quite friendly, especially to those that are well-travelled. Destroying a Book is impossible, as it will simply move to another location when threatened. It may go to a previous user which treated it well, a new user it has a good feeling about, or simply go on vacation. In the worst case, the attention of its author may be attracted.

Some versions, called primes, which look no different than the rest, are functionally artifacts. By tracing the maps it creates with a finger (or equivalent appendage), the user and anyone it is touching passes through each point on the map safely and simultaneously. In reality, each Book is an aspect of one of these prime versions. Those who study it say that the original was created by Hermes the Thrice-Blessed, and this fact is actually reflected on the author’s page in the back.
