Description
This ancient staff has been passed down through seventeen generations of tribal Witch Doctors. The wood, from a long-extinct tree species, has been worn smooth as river stone from centuries of handling, darkened to near-black by oils, blood, and time. Every inch is carved with overlapping symbols: spirals tracking lunar phases, animal totems that seem to shift peripherally, runes in dead languages, and geometric patterns that strain the eyes.
At its crown, raw spirit-quartz is bound with ancient copper wire and braided sinew from seventeen different creatures. The crystal pulses with inner light: amber, blue, forest-green shifting with no discernible pattern. The staff is always warm to the touch, as though recently held by another.
Seventeen distinct marks are carved into the wood, each added by a previous bearer: a bear with extended claws, an inward-drawing spiral, endless knotwork, a perfect oak leaf, a raven mid-flight, a howling wolf, a broken arrow becoming a seed, and ten others whose stories are lost to time.
A single space remains for an eighteenth mark.
Properties
This staff functions as a druidic focus.
Ancestral Communion. Once per short rest, you can cast one of the following spells without expending a spell slot (save DC 15):
- Divination
- Spirit Guardians (appears as spectral shamans and spirit animals; you choose radiant or necrotic damage)
- Commune with Nature
When cast this way, the staff manifests visible effects: carvings glow with inner light, smoke rises from unburning wood, or distant drumming echoes.
The Memory of Places. As an action, you can plant the staff in the ground and meditate for 10 minutes. The staff reveals significant events that occurred at this location within the past century as fleeting visions, emotional impressions, and whispers. You don't receive specific names or dates, but understand the nature of what transpired: battles, deaths, ceremonies, suffering, or joy. This ability can be used on each location only once. Additionally, you instinctively know the direction and approximate distance to any location you've visited while carrying the staff, regardless of distance or conditions.
Witness of the Spirits. While openly carrying the staff, you can see and communicate with spirits, ghosts, and incorporeal undead within 60 feet, even if invisible or on the Ethereal Plane. They appear translucent to you, and you can converse as if sharing a language (though they may refuse or lie). As an action, you can strike the staff against the ground, producing a resonant tone audible on both the Material and Ethereal planes. All spirits within 60 feet become visible and audible to all creatures for 1 minute. Once you use this forced manifestation, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
Spirit Mending. As an action, you can press the staff against a willing creature within your reach, channeling the accumulated life force of seventeen generations through the wood and into their body. The spirit-quartz at the staff's crown flares brilliantly, and the recipient feels a surge of warmth as ancestral energy flows into them. The creature regains hit points equal to 3d8 + your Wisdom modifier, and you can choose to end one of the following conditions afflicting them: blinded, deafened, paralyzed, poisoned, stunned or one disease. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
