Wondrous Item, varies (requires attunement by a Requires attunement by a Wizard)

This crown was crafted by an unknown merchant of amon shaal using the tentacles, skin, and eyes of an aboleth. This item is partly a parasite, carrying the malign and intelligent hatred of the aboleth that was slain to create it. When a creature attunes to it, it cannot remove the item without the use of a spell.

Crown Effects:

The wearer attuned to this item has a telekinetic hover speed of 20 ft, and can telekinetically lift up to 50 pounds of items and move them up to 20 ft a turn using an action. Multiple items can be lifted this way all at once as long as their combined weight is below 50 pounds.

Parasite Effects:

The mind parasite that is the flesh and eyes of an aboleth are still dormant within the makings of the crown. As they feed off of the host and get stronger, the parasite gets more powerful and sentient. The parasite has three stages:

Dormant - The parasite needs to feed to grow and it subconsciously spurns its host to supply it with what it needs.

  • The host will feel the need to eat twice as much as before, and will especially hunger for grey matter/white matter found in brains. If around a fresh carcass with an intact brain, the host needs to make a DC 15 wisdom save.
  • On a fail they are compelled to remove and eventually eat the brain. If they do not do this within the span of 24 hours, they will take 8d10 psychic damage and roll on the short term madness table.
  • It take a remove curse to remove this item from the attuned.

Stirring - The parasite whispers. The host feels less of a need to eat brain matter, and the DC to resist is reduced down to DC 10. The host begins to hear whispers in their mind as it stirs, but it is not yet awakened. The parasite begins to protect its host mentally to protect itself.

  • The host/attuned can no longer go under the effects of charm, fear, or possession.
  • Additionally the presence of the stirring aboleth mind is now powerful enough to mess with mind readers and telepaths. All those who attempt to read the mind of the host will instead need to make a DC 15 arcana check to do so, as the overwhelming presence of the mind of the aboleth interferes with their efforts. On a failure, they are unable to retry for 24 hours and will be under the impression that the host is an aboleth or something similar in disguise.
  • Empowered Crown: Additionally the hover speed increases by 5 ft, and the telekinetic carry weight increases by 10 pounds.
  • The attuned requires a DC 18 wisdom save for the attuned if anyone attempts to remove the crown for them. On a failure, the attuned is hostile towards the ones attempting to remove the crown until they either die or cease trying to remove the item.

Awakened - The parasite awakens. It can now communicate with its host, but secretly hates it and all those who have slain it. Despite its hatred, it continues to empower its host as it has found itself to be fully magically bound to this crown and wishes to ensure its survival until one day it gets the opportunity to free itself. It's playing the long game.

  • The host can use the crown to give itself advantage on any wisdom or intelligence based skill checks (except perception) up to 3 times a day.
  • The parasite however can twice per day induce disadvantage on any d20 roll the host rolls without the host knowing.
  • The host develops a taste for brains and need to feed on them once every three days. If they do not consume brains this way they will take a level of exhaustion for every day after the third.
  • The host retains the immunity to fear, charm and possession, and gains full immunity from mind readers as the parasite is powerful enough to psionically eclipse the feeble mind of its host.
  • The wearer is resistant to psychic damage.
  • Ascended Crown: The hover speed increases massively to a total of 50 feet of movement, and the telekinetic carry weight increases massively to 200 pounds and can now grasp onto creatures with an action, with a contested arcana vs athletics/acrobatics.
  • It now takes the wish spell to remove the crown from the attuned as they have fully fused as one.
