Ain'Duana Valanas is an elegant longsword of exceptional craftsmanship made from an unknown ebon metal that doesn’t reflect light. Ain’Duana Valanas has spent so long underground that it’s magic has attuned to darkness, because of this when exposed to sunlight it functions as a normal longsword +1.
Vorpal
You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. In addition, the weapon ignores resistance to slashing damage.
When you attack a creature that has at least one head with this weapon and roll a 20 on the attack roll, you cut off one of the creature's heads. The creature dies if it can't survive without the lost head. A creature is immune to this effect if it is immune to slashing damage, doesn't have or need a head, has legendary actions, or the GM decides that the creature is too big for its head to be cut off with this weapon. Such a creature instead takes an extra 6d8 slashing damage from the hit.
Defender
The first time you attack with the sword on each of your turns, you can transfer some or all of the sword's bonus to your Armor Class, instead of using the bonus on any attacks that turn. For example, you could reduce the bonus to your attack and damage rolls to +1 and gain a +2 bonus to AC. The adjusted bonuses remain in effect until the start of your next turn, although you must hold the sword to gain a bonus to AC from it.
Undead bane
When you strike an undead creature with this weapon you deal an additional 1d6 radiant damage.
Spell storing
Ain’Duana Valanas stores spells cast into it, holding them until the attuned weilder uses them. The sword can store up to 5 levels worth of spells at a time. When found, it contains 1d6 − 1 levels of stored spells chosen by the GM.
Any creature can cast a spell of 1st through 5th level into the sword by touching it as the spell is cast. The spell has no effect, other than to be stored in the sword. If the sword can't hold the spell, the spell is expended without effect. The level of the slot used to cast the spell determines how much space it uses.
While wielding this sword, you can cast any spell stored in it. The spell uses the slot level, spell save DC, spell attack bonus, and spellcasting ability of the original caster, but is otherwise treated as if you cast the spell. The spell cast from the sword is no longer stored in it, freeing up space.
Sentience
Ain’Duana Valanas is a sentient chaotic good weapon with an Intelligence of 12, a Wisdom of 10, and a Charisma of 12. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet.
The weapon communicates by transmitting emotions, sending a tingling sensation through the wielder’s hand when it wants to communicate something it has sensed. It can communicate more explicitly, through visions or dreams, when the wielder is either in a trance or asleep.
Ain’Duana Valanas won’t serve anyone it regards as craven, erratic, corrupt, or at odds with preserving and protecting elvenkind. If the blade rejects you, you make ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws with disadvantage for 24 hours. If the blade accepts you, you become attuned to it and a new rune appears on the blade. You remain attuned to the weapon until you die or the weapon is destroyed.
Personality
The first hero to wield Ain’Duana Valanas was of good alignment and a great protector of his people as the went below ground. However as the influence of the Underdark worked upon the subsequent bearers of the blade they fell into neutrality, chaos, and finally evil. Because of this the sword is chaotic good but has moments of neutrality and evil as different souls come to prominence within it.
The weapon is bonded to the family line it is meant to serve. Once it has bonded with an owner who shares its ideals, its loyalty is absolute.
If Ain’Duana Valanas has a flaw, it is overconfidence. Once it has decided on an owner, it believes that only that person should wield it, even if the owner falls short of the ideals of Elvenkind.
History
Ain'Duana Valanas, “Valor of the Elves” in the first tongue of the Fey, is an ancient sentient sword forged by the elves who would become the drow before they descended into the Underdark to protect them from the challenges they would face there. It was crafted with the help of the Lord of Ravens, an archfey prince of the unseelie court, and his influence is evidenced by the unnatural blackness of the blade that seems to drink in the light around it. He bound the soul of the first hero to wield Ain’Duana Valanas to the weapon proclaiming “Bound is your soul to this blade awoken til it’s task is done or the blade is broken” the Lord of Ravens smiled a sad smile as he laid another enchantment on the blade “While elven souls within this blade do dwell, it shall not break by Heaven, Earth, and Hell.” The first hero’s soul, and those of the five to bear the sword after him, are represented by runes on the blade.
