Aegis of the Godborn is a legendary vambrace and folding pavise forged from dark, star-forged metal and threaded with faintly pulsing shadow-runes. When closed it appears as a heavy, articulated gauntlet segmented to the elbow; when deployed the vambrace blossoms into a broad, curved shield that straps across the forearm and projects a dim halo of protective gloom. The metal drinks light; the runes sigh with a cold, patient heartbeat while the device holds power.

Origin and Theme

The Aegis is said to have been crafted by a cult of demi-god smiths who sought a way to make divine protection portable and retaliatory. Its nature is both defensive and vindictive: it does not merely deny wounds, it banks them as a promise of return. The item carries the weight of divine favor and hushed obligation—bearers feel a subtle pressure to stand between danger and others, and the vambrace seems to prefer wearers who answer blows with measured reprisal rather than reckless aggression.

Attunement Requirement

Attunement: To attune you must don the vambrace into battle and suffer an attack to fail against you. The attack must be a hostile attack that would hit but does not deal damage (a miss due to circumstance or a save that negates damage does not complete the bond). Once the condition occurs while you wear the vambrace, the Aegis bonds to your arm and will not attune to another until the bond is broken by remove curse, death, or similar magic. Attunement is personal and difficult to transfer.

Deployment and Activation

  • Deployed State: When unfolded the Aegis functions as a shield granting +2 AC.
  • Activated State: As a bonus action while deployed, you may activate the Godborn Guard; the shield’s AC bonus doubles to +4 and the vambrace emits a low, protective gloom for up to 1 minute. Activation ends early if you choose, if the vambrace is forcibly removed, or after 1 minute. This activation recharges on a short or long rest.

Absorb Reaction and Storage

  • Absorb Reaction: While the Aegis is deployed you may use your reaction once per round to absorb damage from an incoming attack that would hit you. The attack deals 0 damage to you; instead an equal amount of that damage is converted into an Aegis Charge of force energy stored within the device. The Aegis cannot absorb damage from effects that explicitly bypass reactions or that do not trigger a reaction to reduce damage.
  • Storage Capacity: The Aegis can hold up to 6d12 force damage. If an absorbed hit would exceed remaining capacity, the Aegis takes as much as it can store and any excess damage is applied to you normally. Charges persist visibly as faint shadow-etchings along the vambrace.

Redeem Strike

  • Redeem Bonus Action: On your next turn after storing damage, you may use a bonus action while the Aegis is retracted or deployed to make a melee attack with the gauntlet against a creature within 5 feet. On a hit, the target suffers the stored force damage and the charge is expended. On a miss, half the stored damage is still released into the target (rounded down) and the remainder dissipates.
  • Retention: If you do not use the Redeem Strike on your next turn, the charge may be held for up to 3 of your turns before dissipating harmlessly. Only one charge stack may exist; subsequent absorptions replace or top up the existing stored amount within capacity.

Limitations and Interactions

  • The stored damage is force damage that bypasses nonmagical resistance but remains subject to immunities or resistances to force at the DM’s discretion.
  • The Aegis cannot absorb damage from area effects that do not target you with an attack roll unless the effect grants a reaction to reduce damage. It does not prevent conditions, forced movement, grapples, or effects that don’t deal hit point damage.
  • If the Aegis is struck by a critical hit and you choose to absorb, the full critical damage may be stored subject to the capacity limit.
  • If the vambrace is forcibly removed while holding a charge, the charge shatters outward in a diminished outburst that deals half the stored damage to creatures adjacent to the wearer and ruins the device until repaired by a caster capable of legendary item repair.

Flavor and Usage Notes

The Aegis favors defenders and tacticians; it rewards timing and restraint as much as courage. In combat it creates tense choices—absorb a devastating blow and risk the enemy’s retreat before you can strike back, or take a smaller hit now and save the charge for a decisive counter on the next turn. In role and story the vambrace can be an heirloom of a fallen god-line, a symbol of divine trust, or a haunted relic that whispers of bargains made in blood.

This mechanized shield retracts into a bracer worn on the forearm. With a quick motion, it can be expanded just as an opponent believes they’ve snuck a blow.

You can wear the Retractable Shield as a bracer on your forearm, and it does not count as having that hand occupied while the shield is retracted. As a Reaction to an attack hitting you, you can extend the shield, giving you a bonus to your Armor Class equal to your Proficiency Bonus against that attack. If this changes the attack from a hit into a miss, you may make one melee attack with a weapon or an Unarmed Strike against the provoking creature if they are within reach. The shield remains extended until the start of your next turn.

As a free interaction with an object on your turn, you can either extend or retract the shield. While the shield is extended, it occupies your hand and confers a +2 bonus to your Armor Class.

Notes: Bonus: Armor Class, To attune you must don the vambrace into battle and suffer an attack to fail against you. Attunement is personal and difficult to transfer
