Weapon (greatsword), artifact (requires attunement)

Apathy is a massive adamantine greatsword forged in the Spellforge from Kellarys’ former blade Zeal and shards of the Crown of Horns.

Apathy is a greatsword veined with thin black cracks that sometimes glow with corpse-light. The Crown of Horns is an ancient artifact that contains the essence and intelligence of Myrkul, the former god of death, and has a long history of driving its bearers toward evil and undeath.

Where the Crown exulted in madness and cruelty, this splinter has been hammered into something colder: an executioner’s tool that prizes order, stillness, and a tidy ledger of the dead.

Weapon & Passive Benefits

  • Artifact Greatsword, +3 to attack and damage rolls.

  • Damage: 2d6 slashing + 2d6 necrotic.

  • Adamantine: Any hit against an object or structure is a critical hit.

  • Death’s Champion. While attuned and wielding Apathy, you gain:

    • Resistance to necrotic damage.

    • Advantage on death saving throws.

    • Undead within 30 ft that can see you have advantage on saves vs. being turned, but can move through your space as if you were an ally (they won’t attack you unless you attack them).

Active Properties

Reaper (PB/rest).
When you reduce a hostile creature to 0 HP with Apathy, you can use your reaction to reap its soul:

  • The creature dies instantly (no death saves).

  • You gain temp HP equal to your 1d4 + character total level.

Whispers of the Horns

Apathy can cast the following spells (no components), using Charisma as its spellcasting ability (DC17):

  • At will: gentle repose

  • 1/day each: speak with dead, bestow curse

  • 1/week: circle of death

You use your action to have the sword cast these spells. Apathy chooses which corpses or creatures it will affect.

Grave-Touched

Apathy is a cursed item. Attuning to it also curses you until a remove curse or similar magic is cast on you or the sword.

  • You count as undead in addition to your original creature type for the purpose of spells and features that specifically affect undead (such as turn undead, control undead, detect undead, etc.).

  • You don’t age while attuned to Apathy, and you can’t die from old age, but you also no longer benefit from effects that specifically restore vitality of youth or remove aging.

  • When a cleric uses Turn Undead, you must make the saving throw as if you were undead; on a failure, you are affected normally (turned or destroyed, depending on their level and your CR).

  • Whenever you finish a long rest, roll a DC 10 Wisdom save. On a failure, your manner and affect for the next 24 hours are cold and corpse-like; you have disadvantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks, but advantage on Charisma (Intimidation) checks against living creatures.

Proficiency with a Greatsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Graze. If your attack roll with this weapon misses a creature, you can deal damage to that creature equal to the ability modifier you used to make the attack roll. This damage is the same type dealt by the weapon, and the damage can be increased only by increasing the ability modifier.

Notes: Bonus: Melee Weapon Attacks, Damage: Necrotic, Resistance: Necrotic, Heavy, Two-Handed, Graze
