Ring, legendary (requires attunement)

Upon attuning to the ring, the wearer chooses one ally it trusts. The chosen ally’s soul is then bonded to and protected by the wearer’s soul. If the ally takes damage that would reduce their hit points to be reduced to or beyond 0, they instead drop to 1 hit point and gain one level of exhaustion as long as the wearer is conscious. If the ally gains 6 level of exhaustion this way, they do not die, but instead fall unconscious for the duration of one long rest. Upon awaking, the ally gains all the benefits of a long rest and is reduced to 5 levels of exhaustion. 

You can change the chosen ally during a short rest, though the ally cannot be attuned to another Ring of Bound Souls nor be the target of another creature attuned to another Ring of Bound Souls.
