Wondrous Item, artifact

At first sight it looks like a large, oblong egg with a flat base. There are thin engravings and lines on its surface, forming intricate geometric patterns. In its inert state the item feels cool to the touch, and will not activate to level 1 unless it receives the correct input impulse, depending on the type of core. The length and intensity of the impulse is not so relevant. What is relevant is that it must be made with intention. Incorrect attempts will yield no response. The item cannot be damaged with spell attacks below 7th level.

Aeorian cores are used as power source for some of the Aeorian automatons.

Light core - requires a directed light impulse.

Fire core - requires a sudden raise in temperature.

Ice core - requires a sudden drop in temperature.

Shock core - requires an electrical jolt.

Mind core - requires a strong mental impulse, such as psionics, telepathy or psychic attack.

Once they reach level 1, the cores will emit a coded sequence of impulses of the same type as that required for activation (this may cause some problems for some of the cores, especially if held in someone's hand). The cores will then wait for the correct response for 20 seconds, humming gently. If no response is given, or if the response is incorrect, they will revert back to the inert state. The DM can pick any numeric sequence puzzle for the activation code.

If the correct code is given, the cores will fully activate. They will attempt to animate any construct within a 10 foot range. If nothing is found, any object such as spoons, chairs, broomsticks, and so on, will attempt to assemble and form some kind of deambulating structure. Without a sufficiently elaborate construct, the attempt will fail and the core will revert to its inert state.

If a construct is found, it will animate and grab the core to incorporate it into its structure. The construct, based on its complexity, will obey the activator's commands. The construct continues to function until its destruction or until the activator issues a "deactivate" command. Stats and abilities of the construct depend on the design and are determined by the DM.

If an aeorian core is placed inside the slot of an unpowered automaton of the correct type, the automaton itself will activate the core. The individual who placed the core is not in control of the automaton.
