For an Illrigger, it feels less like casting and more like executing a combat protocol.

🔧 PRIMARY MECHANIC — Routing & Overdrive

Arcane Routing

When you cast a spell or use a spell-like class feature, you may route it through the lattice, choosing one of the following modifications:

• Vector Shift — Change the spell’s shape (line ↔ cone ↔ small burst)

• Range Reallocation — Increase range by 50%

• Impact Focus — Add +1 damage die OR impose disadvantage on one save

• Latency Hold — Delay the spell’s effect by up to 1 round

Each routing costs 1 Lattice Stress.

⚙️ SECONDARY MECHANIC — Engine Fuel

The lattice cannot function without power.

You may fuel the engine by expending one of the following:

• Hit Dice

• Illrigger Seal (counts as 1 fuel)

• Taking 1d6 necrotic damage per fuel (cannot be reduced)

Each fuel removes 1 Lattice Stress or enables Overdrive.

🔥 OVERDRIVE MODE

When you fuel the engine beyond safe thresholds, you may engage Overdrive:

• Apply two routing modifications to a single spell or ability

• OR double one routing effect

Cost:

• 2 fuel immediately

• Gain 1 level of Exhaustion OR suffer a backlash (DM choice)

Illriggers excel here because they already manage seals, self-damage, and risk-reward loops.

🩸 ILLRIGGER SYNERGY (Intentional, Not Required)

Seal Integration

• Spending an Illrigger Seal as fuel:

  • Does not trigger backlash

  • Causes the lattice to glow with infernal geometry

• Routing a spell against a sealed target:

  • Automatically counts as Overdrive without additional fuel

Punitive Optimization

When targeting a creature that has:

• Broken a contract

• Betrayed an ally

• Violated an oath

The first routing each turn is free.

This is lawful cruelty, not divine judgment.

⚠️ FAILURE STATES (Important for Balance)

If Lattice Stress exceeds your Proficiency Bonus:

Roll on Arcane Feedback:

• Spell distorts unpredictably

• You suffer forced movement

• Your next spell costs additional fuel

• Temporary arcane scarring (roleplay + minor penalty)

Illriggers are better at surviving this, not avoiding it.

• Not overpowered: power is gated by HP, seals, and exhaustion

• Tactical: routing decisions matter every turn

• Thematic: feels like infernal war engineering without being religious

• Flexible: usable by others, but optimized for Illriggers
