Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement by a by an Artificer)

This tight-fitting leather mask features brass filtration canisters on the cheeks and a reinforced exhaust valve on the chin connected to three cartridges located under the jaw. The mask smells faintly of ozone and sulphur.

Charges: The mask has 3 charges, one per each cartridge. It regains all expended charges when you finish a long rest.

Outside of a long rest, you may attempt to refill a number of expended cartridges equal to half your Proficiency Bonus (rounded up) per day. To refill one cartridge, you must spend 10 minutes, 10 gp worth of common alchemical reagents, and succeed on an Intelligence (Alchemist’s supplies) check (DC 14).

On a failure, the reagents and time are expended, and the cartridge is not refilled. Each cartridge requires a separate attempt.

Filtration (Passive): You have advantage on saving throws against harmful gases, vapours, and inhaled poisons (such as CloudkillStinking Cloud, or a Green Dragon’s breath weapon).

Vaporous Escape: When you take damage from a creature you can see or a creature ends its turn within 5 feet of your position, you can use your reaction and expend 1 charge to activate the mask’s exhaust valve and release a cloud of alchemical smoke.

  • The Cloud: A cloud of smoke is created that lasts until the end of your next turn. The smoke fills the space you occupy and all spaces within 5 feet of you. The area is heavily obscured for all creatures, including you.

  • The Escape: Immediately after creating the cloud, you can move up to half your speed (rounded up if needed). This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. (This benefit does not apply to creatures that can see through heavy obscurement).

  • Dissipation: The smoke dissipates naturally at the end of your next turn or if dispersed by a wind of moderate or greater speed.

Double-Edged Fumes: The smoke is abrasive and the expulsion is violent. When you use this reaction, you must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw.

  • You have advantage on this saving throw (due to the mask's passive property).

  • Failure: On a failed save, you take 1d4 acid damage, and your movement speed for this reaction is reduced by 5 feet due to coughing.

  • Success: You take no damage and can perform the escape movement normally.
