A fractured crystal pulsing with incomplete arcane equations. The magic within strains to finish spells—but cannot fully rewrite them.
Partial Spell Amplification
While attuned to Aghanim’s Shard, when you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, you may apply one of the following Shard Enhancements.
You can use this feature three times per long rest.
Shard Enhancements
Choose one when casting a spell:
1. Empowered Casting
Minor Damage Boost
-
Increase the spell’s damage by one additional damage die per spell level
-
Example:
-
Fireball (3rd level, 8d6) → 11d6
-
-
-
This bonus damage is the spell’s original damage type.
2. Fractured Targeting
Limited Multicast
-
If the spell targets one creature, you may target one additional creature
-
The second target must be within 10 feet of the original target.
3. Expanded Spellfield
Minor Area Increase
-
If the spell has an area of effect, increase its radius or length by 50%
-
Example:
-
20-ft radius → 30-ft radius
-
Arcane Feedback
Each time you use a Shard Enhancement, roll a d6:
-
1–2 → You take 1d6 force damage
-
3–6 → No negative effect
This reinforces that the shard is unstable, unlike the perfected scepter.
Arcane Limitation
-
You cannot apply an enhancement to:
-
Cantrips
-
9th-level spells
-
-
You may only apply one enhancement per spell
Lore
Aghanim’s Shards are remnants of failed or incomplete scepters—fragments that still remember how magic should have been cast.
Many apprentices treasure them.
Archmages warn against reliance.
“The Shard shows you the path.
The Scepter lets you walk it.”
