Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement)

These unassuming spectacles have slightly crooked frames and lenses that never quite sit straight.

Effect

When a creature places the Actually Glasses over their eyes, the magic immediately takes hold:

  • The wearer is compelled to raise their right hand, adjust the glasses, and say:
    “Well, actually…”
  • Immediately after, the wearer gains a sudden burst of precise, pedantic knowledge about one relevant creature, object, location, or phenomenon within 30 feet.
  • The wearer is magically compelled to state this information aloud, even if it is unnecessary, awkward, or obvious.

This targeted knowledge functions similarly to a very limited, unsolicited lore dump and may include facts such as:

  • Historical trivia
  • Taxonomy or classification
  • Structural weaknesses or properties
  • Names, titles, or origins

The knowledge is accurate but may be annoyingly specific rather than strategically optimal, at the DM’s discretion.

Usage Limits

  • Once per day, the wearer may gain relevant knowledge as described above.
  • If the glasses are placed on the face a second or third time in the same day, the magic still compels the phrase and adjustment, but the knowledge gained is entirely random and completely unrelated to the current situation, adventure, or threat.

Examples include:

  • Obscure facts about extinct animals
  • Incorrectly timed historical anecdotes
  • Deeply specific information about distant planes, local architecture styles, or cheese-making traditions
  • After three uses in a single day, or if the glasses are worn continuously, the magic shuts down entirely. The glasses function as non-prescription eyewear and confer no benefits or penalties.

Usage

  • First Use each day's provided but the GM, and is relevant to the Campaign.
  • 2nd & 3rd uses each day the player must roll on the "Well, actually Table"

Side Effects

  • The compulsion cannot be suppressed or altered.
  • The wearer cannot choose not to speak the knowledge.
  • Allies may develop an overwhelming urge to sigh.

Curse?

The Actually Glasses are not cursed, but many who wear them are asked to remove them anyway.
