Wondrous Item, very rare

Astryx Petals are gossamer-thin floral fragments that appear more like folded light than living matter. Each petal shimmers with drifting specks of violet, pearl, and soft indigo, as though distant stars were caught within translucent silk. Their edges ripple gently even in still air, trailing faint motes that vanish moments after shedding.

When brought near spellcasting, the petals unfurl slightly, responding to intent rather than motion. Spellcasters describe a profound sense of openness while holding them, as if magic flows more willingly, encountering less resistance as it takes form.

Raw Material Use

In their unprocessed state, Astryx Petals may be used as a material component for spells involving cosmic forces, teleportation, divination, protective magic, or reality-adjacent effects.

  • When used raw, the petals are consumed during casting.
  • When you cast a spell using raw Astryx Petals, choose one of the following benefits:
    • Gain a +1 bonus to the spell’s save DC or spell attack roll.
    • Increase the spell’s range by 30 feet (if it has a range greater than touch).
  • If the spell targets a creature or area beyond 30 feet, you may ignore half cover for the purposes of that spell.

Risk:
After the spell resolves, the caster must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or suffer momentary disorientation, imposing disadvantage on the next Perception or Initiative roll they make before the end of their next turn.

Processing the Material

Through light-binding rites, ether-curing, and sigil-lamination, Astryx Petals can be refined into Stabilized Astryx Filaments, suitable for repeated and reliable spellcasting.

Processing Requirements

  • Proficiency with Arcana
  • 16 hours of work
  • 250 gp in rare reagents
  • One intact bundle of Astryx Petals

The processed material is not consumed when used as a spell component.

Processed Component Benefits

When used as a material component or integrated into a spellcasting focus, Processed Astryx grants the following benefits:

  • Harmonic Conduction:
Once per turn, when you roll damage or healing for a spell, you may treat one die result of 1 or 2 as a 3.
  • Open Path Casting:
When you cast a spell with a range greater than 30 feet, increase its range by 30 feet. This benefit does not stack with similar effects.
  • Anchored Focus:
You gain a +2 bonus to Constitution saving throws made to maintain concentration on spells of 3rd level or higher.
  • Starlit Precision (1/Long Rest):
When a creature succeeds on a saving throw against one of your spells, you may force it to reroll the saving throw and take the lower result.

These benefits apply only if the processed material is actively used as part of the spell’s components or housed within a focus.

Limitations

  • Processed Astryx has no effect on spells of 8th level or higher.
  • A creature may benefit from only one processed Astryx source at a time.
  • Effects that rely on raw elemental damage gain no additional benefit beyond those listed.

Lore

Astryx Petals are said to form where magic brushes against the vastness beyond the skies, appearing only during rare celestial alignments or in places long touched by planar convergence. Arcanists prize them not for brute power, but for the way they smooth and refine complex spell structures.

Entire spellcasting traditions have arisen around the disciplined use of Astryx, emphasizing reach, clarity, and intentional design over raw excess.

Destruction

Raw Astryx Petals dissolve into harmless motes if exposed to sustained mundane light for 24 hours. Processed Astryx can be rendered inert by sealing it within a lead-lined container and subjecting it to total silence and darkness for three consecutive days.
