Analog EMF Detector
Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement)
This bulky handheld device looks like it was bought from a late-night paranormal catalog sometime in the 1990s. Its plastic casing is scuffed, the wrist strap is frayed, and a row of colored lights runs across the top from green to deep red.
When powered on, the lowest light always glows faintly—even in places with no electricity.
The device emits a soft, nervous hum.
Properties
Electromagnetic Sense
While holding the EMF Detector, you can sweep an area within 30 feet as an action.
The DM secretly determines the reading:
Green (1–2): No supernatural presence
Yellow (3): Residual energy or past activity
Orange (4): Active manifestation nearby
Red (5): Strong entity or ghost within range
You gain advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks to locate undead or invisible creatures while the device is active.
Spike Warning
When a hostile spirit or undead creature moves within 20 feet:
The EMF reader spikes suddenly.
You cannot be surprised by undead while holding it.
Trace the Source
Once per short rest, you may focus on the highest reading for one round.
You learn the general direction of the strongest supernatural presence within 60 feet.
Malfunction Quirk (Very 90’s Tech)
Roll or choose:
The lights lag a second behind real activity.
It occasionally spikes near old wiring or generators.
The device emits loud static when fear is high.
The red light flickers even when nothing is there.
