“Petals like lantern paper, veins like tiny wings, and a scent that persuades spells to land gently.”
Description
This sprig bears a cluster of waxy buds and half-open blossoms, each flower cupping a warm amber core beneath pale, translucent petals that look almost like insect wings. In certain light the petal-veins shimmer, tracing delicate lattices as if nature practiced rune-work when no one was watching.
The sprig is oddly resilient. It doesn’t wilt quickly, and when held near a spellbook or holy symbol it gives off a faint, honeyed warmth. Small motes sometimes hover around it in still air, drifting like lazy fireflies before fading.
Wanderers prize Amberwing blooms as “field components” because they’re light, quiet, and easy to carry, yet reliable enough to smooth a hurried casting.
Magical Properties and Features
1) Component Substitution (Unprepared Use)
While you hold the Amberwing Bloom-Sprig during casting (or keep it tucked into a focus wrap, spellbook ribbon, or reliquary), it can replace non-consumed material components for spells you cast, provided those components have a listed cost of 10 gp or less.
- It cannot replace components that are consumed by the spell, and it cannot replace unique story components the DM deems irreplaceable.
- If a spell lists multiple material components, the sprig may replace all eligible non-consumed components.
2) Soft-Landing Spellwork (Unprepared Benefits)
When you cast a spell using the sprig as the substitute, choose one of the following benefits for that casting:
- Steady Hand: Add +1 to the spell’s attack roll, or
- Clean Pattern: Increase the spell’s save DC by +1 for that casting, or
- Gentle Thread: Add 1d4 to one Concentration saving throw you make before the end of your next turn.
You can use this feature once per short rest.
3) Bee-Line Insight
While the sprig is on your person, you gain a +1 bonus to Nature checks and Arcana checks made to identify plants, reagents, spell components, or herbal preparations.
Preparation
Wax-Seal Infusion (Prepared Use)
Preparing the Amberwing Bloom-Sprig takes 10 minutes and can be performed during a short rest. You must have Herbalism Kit proficiency or Arcana proficiency.
Infusion Requirements (consumed):
- 5 gp worth of beeswax, resin, or sealing wax, and
- A small amount of clean water or warmed tea (any).
Steps of Preparation:
- Warm the Wax: Melt the wax just enough to soften it.
- Press the Petals: Press two blossoms briefly into the wax so their veining leaves an impression.
- Seal the Sprig: Coat the sprig’s stem in a thin wax ring while speaking a simple intent phrase (a prayer, a name, or a single word).
- Cool and Set: The wax hardens into a faintly glowing band.
Once prepared, the sprig produces Amberwing Resin Flakes, enough for 3 doses. Each dose is used for one spellcasting. The flakes remain potent for 24 hours or until used.
Prepared Effects
4) Greater Component Substitution
When you use a dose of Amberwing Resin Flakes during casting, it can replace non-consumed material components with a listed cost of 50 gp or less.
5) Resin-Stabilized Casting
When you cast a spell using a dose of Resin Flakes, you gain all of the following benefits for that casting:
- +1 bonus to spell attack rolls, and
- +1 bonus to your spell save DC, and
- Advantage on the first Concentration saving throw you make for that spell.
6) Lantern-Quiet (Prepared Stealth)
Once per long rest, when you cast a spell using Resin Flakes, you can muffle the casting’s sensory tells. Until the spell is complete, creatures have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks to notice you casting (DM discretion). This does not stop a creature that can clearly see you from recognizing the casting if it has reason to watch you.
Item Bonuses
- Attribute Bonus (if any): —
- Armor Bonus (if any): —
- Skill Bonus (if any): +1 Nature and +1 Arcana (reagent/component-related checks only)
- Proficiency Bonus (if any): —
Drawbacks and Risks
Nature’s magic is cooperative, but not obedient.
Sticky Resonance
If you use Resin Flakes for a spell that deals fire damage, roll a d20. On a 1–2, the resin “catches” the heat and snaps:
- You take 1d6 fire damage, and
- Your hands glow faintly for 10 minutes, shedding dim light in a 5-foot radius.
Overharvest
If you attempt to prepare more than one sprig’s worth of Resin Flakes in a single day, the second sprig becomes brittle. Its Resin Flakes yield only 1 dose instead of 3.
Lore and History
Amberwing blooms grow in sheltered thickets where warm air meets cool mist, often along old paths, spring-fed ravines, or the edges of sacred groves. Frontier wardens use them as “insurance” against shaky weather and shakier hands. Traveling clerics like them because they’re gentle on the spirit, and scribes like them because their wax preparation doubles as a sealant for field notes and scroll-cases.
Among some ranger circles, giving an Amberwing sprig is a quiet blessing: May your spells land clean, and your footsteps land quieter.
