“The sky keeps its secrets in layers. This wand peels them back.”
This wand is a study in elegant contradiction: a sleek, midnight-black shaft tapering to a needle point, set into a handle of pale resin shot through with swirling storm-colors, like cloudbanks trapped under ice. Veins of violet and sea-glass blue drift through the grip in slow, marbled currents. Gold filigree bands separate the sections, each ring etched with tiny sigils so fine they look like decorative lace until the wand is lifted and the runes quietly awaken.
At the pommel hangs an ornate metal flourish, a delicate cage of curled bronze-gold leaves around a small, dark bead that seems to swallow light rather than reflect it. When the wand is held to the ear, the sound is not a tick but a faint, distant chime, as if somewhere far away a door closes softly in a cathedral made of stars.
When magic courses through the Asterwake Scepter, the resin grip brightens from within, and the black shaft gains a thin halo, like heat shimmer over obsidian. The air near the tip tastes faintly of ozone and cold stone, the flavor of threshold places and high altitudes.
Magical Properties and Features
1) Six-Charge Zenith Reservoir
The Asterwake Scepter holds 6 charges. At dawn, it regains all expended charges (returning to 6).
You can use the wand as a spellcasting focus.
Overdraw Catastrophe. If you expend the wand’s last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the wand’s resin grip clouds over like frozen milkglass and the scepter becomes nonmagical until the next dawn. (It does not permanently break, but it “refuses” you for a day.)
2) High-Circle Spellcasting (5th Level and Above)
While holding the wand, you can expend charges to cast one of the following spells. You use your spell save DC and spell attack modifier. If a spell requires material components with a gold cost, the wand does not replace those components.
3 Charges (5th-level)
- Wall of Force
- Hold Monster
- Teleportation Circle
4 Charges (6th-level)
- Disintegrate
- Globe of Invulnerability
Casting Note: These spells are cast at their base level as listed above.
This structure lets the wand throw truly high-tier magic multiple times per day, bounded by the strict arithmetic of six daily charges (for example: two 5th-level spells, or one 6th-level spell plus a 5th-level spell only if you have enough charges remaining).
3) Asterwake Channeling (Spell-Rigging)
When you cast a spell from the wand, you can choose one of the following channeling benefits. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest:
- Silent Aperture: Cast the spell without verbal components.
- Still Aperture: Cast the spell without somatic components, provided you are holding the wand.
- Braced Aperture: You gain advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain Concentration on that spell until the start of your next turn.
- Far Aperture: Increase the spell’s range by 30 feet (or double it if the spell’s range is 30 feet or less). This can’t extend a spell with a range of Self.
4) Starward Rebuke (1/Long Rest)
The scepter dislikes being interrupted.
When a creature you can see within 60 feet casts a spell, you can use your reaction to flare the wand’s internal stormlight and attempt to sever the casting. The caster must succeed on a Charisma saving throw against your spell save DC or the spell fails and is wasted.
Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
(This functions like a “soft” counter, distinct from Counterspell, and gives the wand a signature edge without adding a seventh spell.)
Drawbacks and Risks
Altitude of the Mind. Each time you cast a 6th-level spell from the wand (Disintegrate or Globe of Invulnerability), you take 1d6 psychic damage per charge spent (4d6) as the scepter’s channel “thins the air” inside your thoughts. This damage can’t be reduced or prevented by resistance. If this damage reduces you to 0 hit points, you fall unconscious but stable (your mind simply “descends”).
Lore and History
The Asterwake Scepter is said to be built around a sealed “wake-knot,” a crystallized remnant of a planar crossing, where the sky briefly forgot what direction was. Such wands are most often found in the hands of high-circle wardens, catastrophe mages, and gatewrights: people who handle problems that cannot be negotiated with.
In some arcane circles, the scepter is called a threshold implement, because it does not create power so much as it opens the correct doors. In others, it’s a forbidden luxury, because anything that can casually produce a Wall of Force has a habit of changing politics.
Additional Roleplay Features
- Resin Weather
The marbled grip subtly shifts “forecast.” Before a major magical event within 1 mile (ritual completion, planar breach, mass spellcasting), the resin clouds slightly for a minute, like stormlight gathering. - The Dark Bead’s Thirst
If you cast Disintegrate, the bead at the pommel briefly appears wet, as if it drank a shadow. - Cathedral Chime
When you cast Teleportation Circle, the air carries a faint bell-tone audible to creatures within 30 feet, like a distant nave acknowledging your passage.

Summary of Item
The Asterwake Scepter is a Legendary wand with 6 charges that fully refreshes to 6 each dawn, allowing its wielder to cast a suite of 5th and 6th-level spells by spending charges: Wall of Force, Hold Monster, Teleportation Circle (3 charges each) and Disintegrate, Globe of Invulnerability (4 charges each). It also provides flexible casting advantages (silent/still/braced/range boosts) and a once-per-day anti-caster reaction, balanced by a psychic backlash when channeling its highest-circle magic.
