Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement)

“If you can’t see the sky, learn the language of stone and fungus. The Deepwild is still a forest, just… upside down.”

This pendant is an oval slice of rich violet amethyst, polished to a glassy sheen and shot through with pale, smoky bands like underground twilight trapped in crystal. Wrapped around it is a delicate wirework tree, its trunk and roots tightly wound at the base and its branches spreading into fine, branching filaments across the gem’s face. Near the “heart” of the tree, a small natural cavity in the amethyst holds glittering crystal grit, like a tiny geode left intentionally unsealed.

When worn, the amethyst stays slightly cool, and in darkness its internal bands seem to drift a fraction as the wearer moves, creating the impression of slow-moving subterranean currents. In damp caverns, the wire-tree collects beads of moisture that never quite drip, as if the pendant is sipping the air.

Magical Properties and Features

Uncommon Attunement

Requires attunement. While attuned to the Amethyst Root-Pendant of the Deepwild, you gain the following benefits:

  • Deepwild Lore. You gain proficiency in Nature. If you already have proficiency, you instead gain expertise (double your proficiency bonus) on Nature checks made to identify Underdark flora, fungi, and beasts, as well as subterranean hazards (spore blooms, rot pockets, sinkholes, and thin-stone).
  • Cavernwise Traveler. You gain proficiency in Survival. If you already have proficiency, you instead gain advantage on Survival checks made to navigate underground, avoid getting lost in tunnels, and find safe routes through difficult cavern terrain.
  • Stone-Sense Instinct. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell or hearing while underground (you learn to listen for air movement, water drip patterns, and the wrong kind of silence).

Underdark Familiarity

While underground, you can accurately judge the following without making a check:

  • Direction of the nearest open airflow (a breeze, vent, or passage) within 60 feet
  • Whether nearby water is stagnant or flowing (within 30 feet)

These senses are subtle and may be blocked by sealed stone or strong magical interference.

Item Bonuses

  • Skill/Proficiency Bonuses:
    • Proficiency (or conditional expertise) in Nature
    • Proficiency (or conditional advantage) in Survival
  • Other Bonuses: Advantage on underground Perception checks relying on smell/hearing

Drawbacks and Risks

Deep Echo. The pendant attunes you to the “volume” of the earth. In the first hour after you attune (or after each dawn), loud noises may feel unusually sharp. During this time, you have disadvantage on Constitution saving throws against effects that deafen you. After the hour passes, your senses settle into the pendant’s rhythm.

Lore and History

These pendants are common among fungus-foragers, tunnel-guides, and the rare surface-druids who choose to study the Deepwild. Some claim the first were crafted as peace-tokens between surface circles and subterranean wardens: a reminder that life persists even without sunlight, and that roots do not care whether they grow down into soil or sideways into stone.

In many Underdark enclaves, gifting one is a practical blessing: May you find your way back.

Additional Roleplay Features

  1. Moss-Friend: Harmless moss and lichen are more likely to cling to you in thin patches underground, as if you “look” like safe terrain to them.
  2. Geode Glint: The tiny crystal cavity sparkles brighter when within 30 feet of natural gemstones or mineral veins (no exact direction, just a subtle increase in glitter).
  3. Root-Shadow: In torchlight, your shadow briefly shows faint branching “roots” around your feet when you make a Survival or Nature check.
