Weapon (composite longbow), legendary (requires attunement)

It does not loose arrows. It drafts equations in light and lets the target solve them with their ribs. ⚡🏹

Description

Aethercoil Parallax is a Legendary compound longbow of advanced arcane-engineering, built from a sleek metallic frame, luminous blue energy channels, and tension systems so precise they feel almost sentient. Its limbs curve in elegant, predatory arcs around a rigid central riser of silver-black alloy, while its string and cable assembly shine with concentrated azure force rather than ordinary cordage. The entire weapon hums with restrained power, like a storm folded into geometry and taught patience.

Unlike traditional bows of wood and horn, Aethercoil Parallax is a weapon of refined artificery and disciplined violence. Its body is webbed with open latticework and compact stabilizing structures, making it appear impossibly light for the force it can unleash. When drawn, blue radiance intensifies along the limbs and string, and a faint line of targeting light gathers at the arrow rest as though the bow is already calculating trajectory, drag, and the regrettable future of anything downrange.

In the hand, Aethercoil Parallax feels astonishingly stable. The draw is smooth, the release nearly frictionless, and each shot leaves behind a brief filament of pale energy in the air. It excels in the hands of elite marksmen, artificer rangers, highland wardens, and long-range specialists who prefer precision, repeatability, and a little elegant overkill. In Aetheris, it would be coveted by advanced military houses, private arcanotech guilds, and champions expected to end threats before those threats fully enter the conversation.

Magical Properties and Features

  1. Legendary Magic Weapon

Aethercoil Parallax grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic compound longbow.

In addition, arrows or energy shots fired from this bow deal an extra 1d8 force or lightning damage on each hit, chosen when the attack lands. Against creatures wearing metal armor, constructs, creatures benefiting from magical shielding, or creatures farther than 60 feet away, this extra damage becomes 2d8.

  1. Parallax Mark

Once on each of your turns, when you hit a creature with Aethercoil Parallax, you may impose one of the following effects:

  • Disruption Shot: The target cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn.
  • Pinning Vector: The target’s speed is reduced by 20 feet until the start of your next turn.
  • Exposure Line: The next attack roll made against the target before the start of your next turn has advantage.
  • Overload Pulse: The target takes an additional 1d8 lightning damage.

Constructs and creatures in metal armor have disadvantage on any saving throw the DM calls for related to this feature.

  1. Aether Capacitors

Aethercoil Parallax holds 7 charges and regains 1d6 + 1 expended charges daily at dawn.

You can expend these charges to use the following properties:

  • 1 charge: After you hit with an attack, the shot deals an additional 2d8 force damage.
  • 2 charges: As a bonus action, engage the bow’s stabilization lattice for 1 minute. Until the effect ends, attacks made with this bow ignore half cover, and you do not suffer disadvantage at long range.
  • 3 charges: As an action, fire a splitting energy shaft at a point you can see within 120 feet. Each creature within 10 feet of that point must make a Dexterity saving throw against your weapon save DC, taking 4d8 force damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.
  • 4 charges: As an action, cast lightning bolt through the bow at 4th level. The bolt launches as a compressed beam from the stringline.
  • 5 charges: As an action, fire a penetrator shot in a 90-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in the line must make a Dexterity saving throw against your weapon save DC, taking 6d8 force and lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.
  • 6 charges: As a bonus action, enter Hyperfocus Mode for 1 minute. During this time, your ranged attacks with the bow score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20, and the first hit you score on each of your turns deals an additional 1d8 force damage.
  • 7 charges: As an action, make one ranged weapon attack with advantage. On a hit, the attack deals an additional 8d8 force damage, and the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against your weapon save DC or be stunned until the end of your next turn. Once this option is used, it cannot be used again until the next dawn.
  1. Arc-Sight Array

While attuned to Aethercoil Parallax, you gain the following benefits:

  • Your Dexterity score increases by 2, to a maximum of 24
  • Your Intelligence or Wisdom score increases by 2, to a maximum of 22
  • You gain a +3 bonus to Perception checks
  • You gain a +2 bonus to Investigation checks involving sightlines, mechanisms, arcane devices, traps, or engineered defenses
  • You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks made to detect distant movement, hidden snipers, elevated threats, or invisible distortions caused by magic
  • Attacks made with this bow at long range do not suffer disadvantage
  1. Stillpoint Execution

If you move no more than 10 feet on your turn before attacking with Aethercoil Parallax, the first hit you score with it that turn deals an additional 1d8 piercing or force damage.

If you do not move at all before making the attack, that shot also ignores three-quarters cover, though not total cover.

  1. Counterbattery Protocol

When a creature within the bow’s normal range damages you or an ally you can see with a ranged attack, spell attack, or siege-like effect, you may use your reaction to make one ranged weapon attack against that creature with Aethercoil Parallax.

If that attack hits, it deals an additional 1d8 lightning damage.

You may use this property a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.

  1. Ammunition Synthesis

When you draw this bow without nocking a mundane arrow, it may generate a bolt of condensed blue force instead. These conjured shots count as magical ammunition and vanish immediately after the attack hits or misses.

This allows the bow to function even when ordinary arrows are scarce, which has ruined many carefully laid logistical plans.

Weapon Bonuses

Attribute Bonus: Your Dexterity increases by 2, to a maximum of 24, and your Intelligence or Wisdom increases by 2, to a maximum of 22, while attuned to this weapon.

Magic Bonus: +3 to attack and damage rolls.

Skill Bonus: +3 to Perception and +2 to Investigation involving engineered structures, arcane devices, traps, firing lanes, and distant threats.

Combat Bonus: Extra 1d8 force or lightning damage on hit, increasing to 2d8 against distant, armored, shielded, or construct targets.

Special Property: Ammunition Synthesis. The bow can create its own magical force-arrows when drawn.

Proficiency Bonus: None.

Drawbacks and Risks

Aethercoil Parallax is magnificent, temperamental, and about as subtle as a theorem with teeth.

  • While openly carrying it, you have disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks in darkness due to its faint blue glow and harmonic hum.
  • If the bow is exposed to severe anti-magic interference, electromagnetic-like disruptions, or direct corrosive sabotage of its energy channels, its Aether Capacitors and Ammunition Synthesis properties cease functioning until it is recalibrated during a short or long rest.
  • On a natural 1 rolled for an attack, the string lattice misaligns. The bow still functions as a magic longbow, but you must spend a bonus action to reset it before its charge-based properties can be used again.
  • The weapon rewards composure. If you Dash on your turn, you cannot benefit from Stillpoint Execution until the end of your next turn.

Lore and History

Aethercoil Parallax is believed to have originated in a master forge where artificers and military arcanists sought to create the definitive long-range energy bow, something with the elegance of archery but the ruthless reliability of engineered warfare. Early prototypes reportedly fired brilliantly, catastrophically, or both, which did little for morale but wonders for caution. The perfected line became legendary among elite marksmen assigned to eliminate constructs, hostile mages, siege crews, and airborne threats at impossible distances.

Examples of this bow have been associated with advanced city-state arsenals, private guild enforcers, and rare champion-hunters trusted with problems too dangerous for ordinary volleys. Tales surrounding it include wyverns dropped from moonlit cloudbanks, engines disabled from across ravines, and battlefield sorcerers learning that glowing blue lines in the dark are not always decorative.

It is the kind of weapon that makes cover feel optimistic.

Additional Roleplay Features

  1. Bluewake Strings

The luminous string and cables brighten as tension builds, dimming again the instant after release like breath taken and spent.

  1. Sightline Whisper

When a perfect shot presents itself, the bow emits a barely audible harmonic tone that experienced users learn to trust with unnerving enthusiasm.

  1. Predator by Design

Artificers, officers, elite hunters, and arcane engineers often recognize the weapon instantly as a masterpiece of ranged lethality. It suggests wealth, precision, and a professional interest in ending arguments from very far away.
