This simple polished ring bears a tiny smiling face engraved on its inner band. It feels reassuringly warm and seems to subtly shift to always appear clean and well-kept.
It is, very clearly, not cursed.
Fortune’s Favor
While wearing and attuned to this ring, you can invoke its magic to gain advantage on one ability check of your choice.
Once this property is used, it cannot be used again until after a Long Rest.
Curse: Delusional Confidence
Attuning to this ring curses you until you are freed by Remove Curse or similar magic.
While cursed:
- You are completely incapable of believing the ring is cursed.
- Any attempt to convince you the ring is cursed automatically fails, regardless of logic, evidence, magical persuasion, or past experience.
- You rationalize all negative outcomes as coincidence, user error, or bad luck unrelated to the ring.
This effect overrides normal behavior, alignment tendencies, and reasonable suspicion, but does not otherwise control your actions.
Unlucky Aftertaste
After you use the ring’s Fortune’s Favor, the next ability check you make is rolled with disadvantage.
You do not perceive this disadvantage in any way.
To you, the roll feels completely normal.
You cannot willingly delay or avoid making this check once a meaningful check arises.
Obvious to Everyone Else
Any creature that travels with you or meaningfully interacts with you for more than 2 continuous hours comes to the strong and undeniable conclusion that:
“That ring is cursed.”
This realization requires no check.
Creatures aware of the curse may freely discuss it with each other.
Arcane Obfuscation
The ring actively resists investigation.
- While unattuned, Identify, Legend Lore, Arcana checks, or similar magic reveal no indication of any curse.
- After attunement occurs, attempts to determine the nature of the curse produce conflicting, vague, or inconclusive results.
