Wondrous Item, very rare (requires attunement by a Ranger or Druid)

This set of items consists of a locket and a journal. A palm-sized silver locket, etched with rings that mimic a beast’s eye. The hinge is reinforced with tiny trophies: a harpy’s hollow feather, a basilisk’s shed eyelid-scale, a manticore’s half-worn tooth. Inside is a cold shimmer, like the breath of winter caught in a circle. A leatherbound book hardened as if it grew a hide of its own. Each page smells of foreign soil. Feathers, claws, scales, and other trophies are woven into its spine. The ink inside looks like it was written with soot and the blood of impossible things. This journal is half bestiary, half confession. It wants a new hunter. It once belonged to Shimzon Baatje.

Trophy Stasis (Locket)
When you reduce creature of CR 1 or higher to 0 Hit Points, you may open the locket to capture the creature’s final heartbeat, preserving the body as if by the Gentle Repose-spell for up to 20 days. If you do, the body (or select body parts) cannot regenerate, cannot be animated or corrupted by undeath, cannot be revived or resurrected and remains in the exact state it was in at death for the duration. This effect can be applied to a number of creatures equal to the bearer’s Proficiency Bonus.

Slayer’s Prerogative (Locket)
Once per day, as a Magic Action, while at least one creature is affected by Trophy Stasis, you may borrow any one Special Sense or Special Ability (DM’s discretion) of that creature for up to one hour or until incapacitated. When you do, your face and body take on a slight resemblance to match the ability used.

Legacy of the Tracker (Locket)
While you are attuned to Relic of the Last Tracker, you may cast the Hunter’s Mark-spell at will without spending a spell slot.

Natural Instinct (Journal)
By using a Magic Action every round for one minute, you can consult the hunter’s journal and use one of the following abilities:

  • Focusing on one creature described in the journal, you may cast the Locate Creature-spell without spending a spell slot, although the duration is increased to 12 hours. You must still maintain concentration throughout the duration.
  • Focusing on one creature described in the journal, you may cast the Legend Lore-spell without spending a spell slot. All knowledge gained this way only applies to that creature; habits, weaknesses, lairs, temperament, notable history etc. For the next 12 hours, you have Advantage on Animal Handling, Survival and Natureability checks regarding that creature.
