“The first shot is alchemy. The second is doctrine. The third is history deciding it has heard enough.”
Description
The Aether-Strike Mk I is an artifact-grade magnum revolver of impossible ambition, a weapon forged where gunsmithing, arcane engineering, and dangerous certainty converge into one brutal masterpiece. Its long barrel, exposed pressure gauges, engraved frame, illuminated runic cylinder, and underbarrel arcane reservoir give it the look of a prototype that should have remained locked behind adamant doors and triple-signed ledgers. Heat-light pulses through the chamber seals, ember-orange script burns along the frame, and the whole weapon radiates the feeling that it is not merely loaded, but contained.
In the hand, the Aether-Strike feels dense, hot-blooded, and unnervingly awake. Its wooden grip is shaped for firm control against ruinous recoil, while the frame’s reinforced spine and pressure-balancing housings keep the revolver from bucking apart under the force it channels. The cylinder turns with a mechanical inevitability that feels closer to a ritual engine than a sidearm’s action. Every click, lock, and hammer-draw carries the weight of something deliberate. This is not a revolver for warning shots or bluff. It is a weapon that assumes the moment has already passed negotiation.
Unlike ordinary magnum revolvers, the Aether-Strike Mk I is built around a furnace-like arcane heart. The underbarrel hex-cannon reservoir feeds volatile charge into the cylinder’s rune-lined chambers, allowing each round to strike with both physical and metaphysical force. When raised in earnest, the weapon vents faint heat and sparks of glowing motes, and nearby metal often hums in sympathy. Veteran artificers describe it as a sidearm that behaves like a siege engine forced into a duelist’s silhouette.
Throughout Aetheris, the few stories surrounding the Aether-Strike Mk I place it in the hands of catastrophic specialists: forge-lords, monster executioners, anti-fortification champions, champion artificers, and those rare mad saints of battle who survive because their sidearm is nearly as dangerous as the thing they are shooting. Some believe it was the first successful fusion of portable arcane pressure technology and revolver architecture. Others say it was only the first because all later attempts ended in flame, fracture, or planar embarrassment. Either way, the Mk I is spoken of with the careful tone reserved for relics that have not only killed, but changed doctrine.
Magical Properties and Features
- Artifact Magnum Ballistics
The Aether-Strike Mk I grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon.
Its shots count as magical, adamantine, and silvered for the purpose of overcoming resistance, immunity, and damaging fortified structures or specialized supernatural targets.
- Aether-Core Chamber
The revolver’s rune-lined cylinder and pressure-fed reservoir infuse each shot with devastating arcane force.
Once per turn, when you hit a creature with this weapon, the attack deals an additional 3d10 force or fire damage. You choose the damage type when the hit lands.
If the target is within 30 feet, wearing heavy armor, protected by magical wards, or is a construct, siege creature, fiend, or elemental, the extra damage becomes 5d10 instead.
- Hex-Cannon Verdict
The underbarrel reservoir allows the weapon to discharge a more punishing arcane payload when the wielder commits fully.
As a bonus action, you may prime the next shot fired from the Aether-Strike before the end of your turn. If that shot hits, it deals an additional 4d8 fire and force damage, and the target must succeed on a Strength saving throw (DC 19) or be pushed 20 feet and knocked prone.
Once this property is used, it cannot be used again until you finish a short or long rest.
- Breaker of Bulwarks
The Mk I was built to solve the problem of things that think themselves safe.
Attacks made with this weapon ignore half cover and three-quarters cover. In addition, the revolver deals double damage to objects, magical barriers with hit points, locks, doors, siege plating, and constructs of Huge size or smaller.
When you hit a creature concentrating on a spell, that creature has disadvantage on the concentration save.
- Furnace-Line Dominance
The Aether-Strike remains lethally stable even when battle collapses into personal range.
You do not suffer disadvantage on ranged attack rolls made with this weapon while hostile creatures are within 5 feet of you. In addition, when you hit a creature within 20 feet, you may move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks from that creature.
- Overpressure Cycle
The weapon’s gauges and chamber runes can be driven into a dangerous but glorious operating state.
As a bonus action, you can activate Overpressure Cycle for 1 minute. While active:
- The bonus damage from Aether-Core Chamber increases by 2d10
- Your attacks with this weapon score a critical hit on a 19 or 20
- The first time each turn you score a critical hit, the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC 19) or be stunned until the end of your next turn
- The weapon sheds bright orange light in a 15-foot radius and dim light for an additional 15 feet
At the end of each of your turns during Overpressure Cycle, you take 1d10 fire damage that ignores resistance.
Once this property is used, it cannot be used again until the next dawn.
- Sixfold Cataclysm
The Aether-Strike remembers the old fantasy of the perfect cylinder: six answers, each final.
If you hit the same creature with this weapon on consecutive turns, the following benefits stack against that creature, resetting if you miss it or attack a different target:
- Second hit: +1d8 force damage
- Third hit: target’s speed is reduced by 15 feet until the start of your next turn
- Fourth hit: target cannot take reactions until the start of your next turn
- Fifth hit: target has disadvantage on its next saving throw before the end of your next turn
- Sixth hit: the next hit against that target becomes an automatic critical hit
Only one creature can be subject to Sixfold Cataclysm at a time.
- Aetherstorm Release
As an action, you may unleash the revolver’s core in a devastating line of arcane ruin.
Each creature in a 90-foot line that is 10 feet wide must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 19), taking 12d10 force damage and 12d10 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Mundane objects and unattended structures in the line take maximum damage.
After using this feature, roll a d6:
- On a 1, the weapon cannot use Aether-Core Chamber until the next dawn as its reservoir re-stabilizes.
- On any other result, it remains fully operational.
This property cannot be used again until the next dawn.
- Last Chamber, Last Word
When defeat closes in, the Mk I becomes most terrible.
If you are reduced to 0 hit points while attuned to the revolver, but not killed outright, you may immediately make one attack with it against a creature you can see within range. If the attack hits, it is automatically a critical hit and deals an additional 8d10 force damage and 8d10 fire damage.
Once this property is used, it cannot be used again for 7 days.
Sentience
The Aether-Strike Mk I is a sentient neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 19, a Wisdom of 17, and a Charisma of 18. It has hearing and darkvision out to 120 feet.
It communicates telepathically with its attuned wielder and occasionally projects short phrases in a voice like metal expanding in a forge.
Personality
The Mk I is intense, focused, and proud. It does not crave random slaughter, but it deeply admires decisive application of overwhelming force against worthy threats. It values nerve, discipline, technical understanding, and the willingness to commit fully once battle has begun. It has open contempt for waste, cowardice, and those who fire without understanding consequence.
Its counsel often comes as clipped judgments:
- “Pressure is acceptable.”
- “That one requires the full answer.”
- “Do not flinch now.”
- “Containment has failed. Good.”
Purpose
The revolver seeks to prove that power can be mastered without apology. It wants to be wielded by those who face monsters, fortifications, arcane tyrants, and battlefield impossibilities head-on, turning impossible targets into solved problems.
Conflict
If its wielder consistently avoids worthy confrontation, uses the revolver for empty cruelty, or refuses necessary force out of vanity or fear, the Mk I may suppress its higher properties or become dangerously hot to the touch until its bearer restores its respect.
Weapon Bonuses
Attribute Bonus: While attuned to the Aether-Strike Mk I, your Strength or Dexterity score increases by 2, to a maximum of 24. You choose which when you attune.
Magic Bonus: +3 to attack rolls and damage rolls
Skill Bonus: While attuned, you gain proficiency in Arcana and Intimidation. If you already have proficiency in either, you instead gain expertise in that skill.
Proficiency Bonus: Requires proficiency with firearms. If you are attuned but lack firearm proficiency, the weapon grants sufficient instinctive understanding for you to add your proficiency bonus to attacks made with it.
Drawbacks and Risks
- Catastrophic Signature
This revolver does not merely announce itself physically. It leaves an arcane wake.
Its presence can be sensed by artificers, anti-magic wards, planar anomalies, and those attuned to strong magical engines. It is almost impossible to keep fully secret for long.
- Heat of Commitment
The Aether-Strike runs hot in every sense.
Repeated use, especially of its higher functions, may scorch gloves, heat holsters, crack nearby glass, or draw unwanted attention from creatures sensitive to magic, fire, or pressure fluctuations.
- Prototype Temperament
Though an artifact, the Mk I still bears the soul of an early answer to a dangerous question.
It prefers action over dithering and may subtly push a bearer toward escalation, especially when facing fortified or magically protected foes.
Lore and History
The oldest references to the Aether-Strike Mk I describe it as a “proof weapon,” created not for a customer, but for a thesis: that a sidearm could carry enough regulated arcane pressure to rival battlefield implements without tearing itself apart. Most such efforts ended in scattered metal and brief investigations. The Mk I did not. Instead, it survived, and in surviving it became the ancestor, rival, and condemnation of countless later attempts. Some versions of its history place it in a sealed forge where master artificers wagered reputations and limbs on impossible engineering. Others claim it was field-tested against monsters, walls, and warded champions before being deemed too effective and too politically destabilizing to reproduce freely. Whatever its origin, every surviving tale agrees on one point: after the Mk I was fired in anger, the people who witnessed it stopped arguing about whether such a weapon should exist and started arguing about who must never be allowed to hold it.
Additional Roleplay Features
- Living Gauges
The pressure dials and chamber runes shift subtly with mood, threat, and proximity to magical stress.
A practiced bearer can almost read the weapon’s appetite before it speaks.
- Forge-Relic Presence
The Aether-Strike looks like a museum piece that escaped its display case and learned to hunt.
This gives it immense narrative weight in courts, arsenals, artificer enclaves, and battlefield command tents.
- The Cylinder Glow
Its chamber light deepens when danger worthy of it draws near.
This makes for striking roleplay moments where the weapon seems to recognize the importance of a coming fight before the wielder fully does.
